WATCH: New House of the Dragon Season 3 Video Featuring Emma D’Arcy and Tom Glynn-Carney

The Dance of the Dragons is almost here, and the fans are hyped. HBO has released a new promotional video for the upcoming season 3 of House of the Dragon, featuring stars Emma D’Arcy and Tom Glynn-Carney. The two stars appear as their characters, Rhaenyra and Aegon II Targaryen, talking about their team’s status in the war.

The third season of the Game of Thrones spinoff releases on June 21, 2026. While a final trailer has yet to be released by the network, the promo video sets the stage for the headspace that both the characters are in and the conflict that the upcoming season will focus on, much to the excitement of the fans.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Promo Shifts the Battle to Aegon vs Rhaenyra

The latest promo for House of the Dragon season 3 summarizes the previous season and the conflict between the two Targaryen families. The structure sees both Aegon II and Rhaenyra talking about their perspectives, revealing the miscommunications and misunderstandings that started this civil war of succession.

Actor Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon, blames the start of the war on Rhaenyra’s apparent instructions to kill Prince Jaehaerys (assassins Blood and Cheese’s devastating act). Rhaenyra, however, claims that she would never inflict the death of a child on a mother, revealing that it was done on Daemon’s orders.

The duo then goes on to make the case why they deserve the throne. Fans were happy that the studio was finally positioning the war as a conflict between Rhaenyra and Aegon, and not Alicent and Rhaenyra like last season.

The narrative seems to be back to the conflict that George R.R. Martin had written in the book, Fire & Blood.

While previous seasons pitted Team Black and Team Green as a civil war between two matriarchs using their factions for the throne, the plot has finally acknowledged the ruthless Aegon’s contribution in the Dance of Dragons.

Showrunner Spills Beans On HOTD’s Final Season

The third season of House of the Dragon is coming two years after season 2, which itself had a similar two-year gap. While fans are still hyped for the show and how the story progresses, the gap has annoyed fans quite a bit. Despite the backlash, the fourth season will reportedly only be released in 2028, delaying a key storyline in the show.

Another bit of news that showrunner Ryan Condal has mentioned multiple times is that season 4 would be the final one of the show. Unlike the flagship show, Game of Thrones, the spinoff will say goodbye much earlier. In a way, it is good, as the ending of GOT was extremely divisive. 

Condal confirmed again that season 4 would be the end of House of the Dragon (via EW).

I can’t speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes, that is very much my plan.

That makes season 3 the penultimate war before everything ends and ties up to Game of Thrones. Condal is, however, expected to be involved with HBO until 2029 at the very least and is also a producer on the spinoff A Knight of Seven Kingdoms. This is not the end of Westeros by a long shot.
