One of the biggest anime themes is having a goofy and friendly anime character, often the main protagonist, who constantly makes stupid gestures that bring a smile to our faces and even leaves us rolling in laughter at times. But, at the end of the day, they are also humanely designed – a line drawn to the limit of so much they can take until they snap.
The exhilarating factor is that when these characters snap, it feels even more intense – imagine watching a nice and goofy guy for episode after episode, and they suddenly become a raging beast. Without further ado, here are some of the goofiest characters who showed us moments when we were like, “Excuse me, what?” – ranked by the impact of their rage.
10 Zenitsu Went Berserk Against Kaigaku in Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle
Zenitsu from the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle anime | Credits: UfotableFor the entirety of the Demon Slayer anime series, Zenitsu Agatsuma has been nothing more than a coward and a scaredy cat, well, until he falls asleep and becomes a speed demon. But something happened during the later part of the Hashira Training Arc that changed his personality.
After learning that Jigoro Kuwajima committed Seppuku after learning that Kaigaku had become a demon, Zenitsu was locked in. He became a stoic personality with nothing but revenge on his mind when he faced Kaigaku inside the Infinity Castle, ripping the demon into shreds.
9 Luffy Punches a Celestial Dragon With Zero Hesitation in One Piece
Luffy punches Charlos in the One Piece anime | Credits: Toei AnimationLuffy has always been one of the goofiest protagonists from the One Piece series – always getting himself into trouble for his simple and uncomplicated nature. He’s the character who has been spreading wide smiles across our faces for years; that completely changed during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc.
After witnessing Saint Charlos, one of the Celestial Dragons who are the main rulers of the world, shoot Hatchan and abuse innocent people, Luffy lost it completely. He punched the Celestial Dragon with zero hesitation about the consequences and truly declared his statement against the World Government.
8 Gon Becomes a Killing Machine After Kite’s Death in Hunter X Hunter
Adult Gon from the Hunter X Hunter anime | Credits: MadhouseKite was Gon’s primary mentor in Hunter X Hunter, a teacher the innocent and happy-go-lucky protagonist admired and loved dearly. However, he was soon overwhelmed with tragedy as Neferpitou killed Kite. Seeing Kite’s body fall, something changed inside Gon that took away that innocent little boy and made him Adult Gon.
Adult Gon not only hurt Pitou for killing Kite, but he annihilated them to the point where there was nothing left of their body. From tossing them in the air and slamming them hard on the ground to a barrage of punches that tore through organs and bones, it was brutal – and maybe one of the reasons why it is the series’ highest-rated episode.
7 Hantengu Provoked the Monstrous Side of Tanjiro in Demon Slayer
Tanjiro slashing Hantengu in the Demon Slayer anime | Credits: UfotableAmong shonen anime protagonists, Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer is one of the kindest and most forgiving ones – even towards his opponent demons. He understood them rather than blindly chopping away like a Slayer is taught, but even he threw a rage fit against the former Upper Moon Four demon Hantengu.
Hantengu stood for everything Tanjiro detested – cowardice, not taking accountability, blaming others, and most importantly, the lack of nobility in a fight – all these pushed even the kindest and softest Demon Slayer into hacking away at him in a pure display of untamed rage.
6 Naruto Absolutely Loses It After Pain Attacks Hinata in Shippuden
Pain and Naruto from the Naruto: Shippuden anime | Credits: Studio PierrotPain was one of the most intriguing villains in the Naruto: Shippuden anime series – falling second to just a handful of others. His narrative was really complex, and he was set on the pure destruction of the Hidden Leaf Village. However, even the goofy and oblivious Naruto couldn’t hold himself once Pain hurt Hinata.
Seeing Hinata seemingly die in front of him caused Naruto to completely lose himself to the Nine-Tails’ hatred within him. The transformation into the multi-tailed state is fueled entirely by rage, and for a moment, Naruto becomes more monster than hero.
5 Ken Kaneki Completely Breaks After Jason’s Torture in Tokyo Ghoul
Ken Kaneki from the Tokyo Ghoul anime | Credits: Studio PierrotThe Tokyo Ghoul anime protagonist, Ken Kaneki, is one of the purest souls in the series – even after becoming a ghoul and refusing to eat humans for sustenance. And that is probably why, when Jason broke him beyond repair – literally breaking his fingers and putting centipedes in his ears – he lost it completely.
He embraced the dormant Rize inside of him and turned into the white-haired ghoul form. He then returned the favour to Jason by breaking the villain down piece by piece into a gruesome display of feral-like power – a gore anime scene that will surely churn your stomach.
4 Deku Goes Completely Feral Against Overhaul in My Hero Academia
There isn’t a bad thing any of us can really say about the protagonist of the My Hero Academia anime series, Izuku Midoriya – compassionate, polite, and obsessed with saving everyone around him – even villains. But Overhaul crossed a line that even Shigaraki Tomura didn’t.
Seeing the abuse Eri suffered under Overhaul pushes him into a state of furious desperation – Deku abandons caution entirely and unleashes One For All at overwhelming power levels, fighting with reckless intensity to make sure Overhaul can never hurt Eri again.
3 Yuji Snapping After Sukuna’s Shibuya Massacre in Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuji and Mahito from the Jujutsu Kaisen anime | Credits: MAPPAThe Shibuya Incident Arc is one of the most emotionally and narratively excruciating arcs in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series, especially for Yuji Itadori. Yuji spends most of the series trying to save people and shoulder everyone’s pain with kindness.
But then Sukuna takes over and massacres countless civilians in Shibuya – leaving Yuji consumed by overwhelming guilt and rage. His fury reaches another level, and he locks in when Mahito continues tormenting him emotionally, leading to one of the most emotionally brutal breakdowns in modern shonen anime.
2 Ichigo Kurosaki Turning Vasto Lorde Against Ulquiorra in Bleach
Vasto Lorde Ichigo vs. Ulquiorra from the Bleach anime | Credits: Studio PierrotWell, we have to admit that Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach isn’t inherently a goofy character – but he is still a protagonist who will jump to his friends’ aid at the very first chance he gets. Ichigo is protective and compassionate by nature, but Ulquiorra pushes him to the brink, triggering one of the most horrifying transformations in Bleach – Vasto Lorde Ichigo.
The Vasto Lorde form is less a power-up and more a complete loss of humanity, fueled by instinctive rage and desperation. He annihilates Ulquiorra to the very core, blurring the line between a hero and a monster.
1 Goku Turns Super Saiyan After Frieza Kills Krillin in Dragon Ball Z
Goku in his Super Saiyan form in the Dragon Ball Z anime | Credits: Toei AnimationThis wasn’t just a random moment of rage taking over; this was a generational transformation for every shonen anime fan – Goku’s first-ever transformation into the iconic Super Saiyan form in Dragon Ball Z on Planet Namek. Goku spends most of the series cheerful and merciful, even toward enemies.
However, the moment it sinks in that the tyrant Frieza has murdered Krillin, his closest childhood friend, Goku is pushed beyond human restraints. He returns the favour to Frieza in the most powerful and iconic way possible.
