Verity: Anne Hathaway Seduces Dakota Johnson in Colleen Hoover’s Next Adaptation

Verity brings Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson into Colleen Hoover’s darkest screen adaptation yet, and the first teaser suggests this will not be a gentle romance with candlelight and closure. Amazon MGM Studios has released the trailer for the psychological thriller, which stars Hathaway as bestselling author Verity Crawford, Johnson as struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, and Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford. 

The film is directed by Michael Showalter and is currently set for a theatrical release on October 2, 2026. In the teaser, Johnson moves through the Crawfords’ tense household, Josh Hartnett’s Jeremy pulls her into forbidden intimacy, and Hathaway’s Verity lingers over the whole thing like a secret no one can safely touch. Her voiceover warns:

The novel follows Lowen Ashleigh, a financially strained writer who is handed a career-changing job after bestselling author Verity Crawford becomes unable to finish her successful book series. Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband, asks Lowen to sort through Verity’s notes and complete the work.

On paper, it sounds like a professional rescue mission. In practice, it becomes a frightening stay inside a house full of grief, desire, suspicion, and half-truths. Lowen arrives at the Crawford home and learns more about the family’s devastating past. Verity and Jeremy’s daughters, Chastin and Harper, are dead, while their young son Crew remains alive. In it, Verity appears to confess to disturbing thoughts, cruel behavior toward her daughters, and possible responsibility for one of their deaths. The manuscript also paints Verity as intensely fixated on Jeremy, to the point where motherhood becomes something dark and resentful in her mind.

As Lowen reads more, she begins to suspect Verity may not be as incapacitated as everyone believes. Strange sounds, small movements, and growing dread make the house feel unsafe. At the same time, Lowen and Jeremy become romantically involved, which makes her role even more morally tangled. She is no longer only a hired writer. She is emotionally invested in the man whose wife may be hiding a terrible secret.

The final turn is what made the book a major debate magnet among Hoover readers. After Verity dies, Lowen finds a handwritten letter suggesting that So Be It may have been a writing exercise rather than a confession. The letter also claims Jeremy may have harmed Verity after reading the manuscript. Josh Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford, the husband who draws Lowen into both the job and a dangerous emotional attachment. The teaser leans hard into dread, seduction, and psychological ambiguity. Reports on the first footage describe Lowen entering the Crawford estate, being hired to ghostwrite Verity’s unfinished novels, and discovering a hidden manuscript that may be either fiction, confession, or manipulation. PEOPLE also notes that the trailer uses a haunting take on Kylie Minogue’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head, which fits the story’s fixation on obsession and mental unease.

Also, it seems there’s a tonal shift from earlier Hoover adaptations. It Ends with Us leaned into trauma, romance, and survival through a broadly emotional lens, while Verity has a colder, stranger assignment. The production path has been busy. The film adaptation was initially developed under Amazon Studios, with earlier screenplay work before Showalter became attached. Hathaway joined as Verity, with Johnson and Hartnett later added to the cast. The film wrapped in April 2025, and Volker Bertelmann is attached to compose the score.

Hoover adaptations already have a built-in readership, but Verity is not built like a standard love story. Its selling point is unease. The teaser sells Hathaway as the central mystery, Johnson as the witness caught in the Crawford house’s emotional trap, and Hartnett as the man whose grief and desire cannot be taken at face value.
