Dwight Manfredi may have more enemies than he can count on Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King, but the mysterious plane crash involving Margaret Devereaux and Governor Cal Thresher suggests someone could be playing a far deadlier game. The trouble is, nobody knows who was responsible, or whether the crash was deliberate.
Spoiler Alert !!!
Major spoilers for Tulsa King Season 4 Episode 1, “W.W.D.D.,” ahead!
Tulsa King Season 3 ended with Dwight (Sylvester Stallone) killing Jeremiah Dunmire, securing a liquor permit, and angering Quiet Ray. Season 4 sees him trying to legitimize his empire through Friedman Enterprises, but Tyson’s drug robbery, Bill Bevilaqua’s schemes, and Oklahoma politics complicate matters. Then a devastating development threatens everything Dwight has built.
Tyson’s Drug Heist Introduces a Dangerous New Rival
Credit: Brian Douglas/Paramount+Dwight’s dream of going legitimate suffers an early setback when Tyson (Jay Will) and Spencer (Scarlet Stallone) refuse to abandon their lucrative ecstasy business. Their troubles begin with Santiago, a rival dealer who orders them to stop selling drugs in his territory. Instead of negotiating, Tyson convinces Goodie to help rob Santiago’s supply. The heist turns bloody when Santiago catches them stealing his pills and Tyson shoots him. Santiago survives, but his hospital visitor introduces another headache.
English Dan (Richie Stephens), a British crime boss and rival supplier, wants to know who stole the drugs. I found Tyson’s decision particularly exasperating because Dwight has repeatedly warned his crew against unnecessary criminal entanglements. Yet Tyson manages to create another enemy when the new season has barely begun. Stephens, who previously portrayed Dmitri on Mayor of Kingstown, also has a history of involvement in organized crime before becoming an actor. His casting gives the new antagonist an intriguing background, although English Dan’s actual capabilities remain unexplored.
Elsewhere, Mitch (Garrett Hedlund) devises his own questionable interpretation of Dwight’s instructions. He purchases dilapidated replicas of the dealership’s inventory, arranges fraudulent registrations, and begins destroying the vehicles to collect insurance money.
Bill’s Double Game Leaves Dwight Vulnerable
Credit: Paramount+Dwight’s growing whiskey business brings him into another confrontation with Quiet Ray (James Russo), who controls territory essential to his expansion. Dwight offers Ray a 25% share of his operation in exchange for northeastern distribution rights, but Ray demands permission to station a representative in Tulsa. That arrangement hardly inspires confidence, especially when Ray announces his takeover of the Invernizzi family and displays Luca’s severed head as a warning to anyone questioning his authority.
Bill Bevilaqua (Frank Grillo) makes the situation even more precarious. He privately warns Dwight against trusting Ray, then gives Ray an almost identical warning about Dwight. I suspect Bill is deliberately aggravating their rivalry, although his intended advantage remains uncertain. His earlier arrest gives him plenty of reasons to resent Dwight, and manipulating two powerful mobsters could prove more profitable than confronting either directly. Still, there’s no evidence connecting Bill to the plane crash.
Tulsa King Ending Explained: Who Targeted Margaret and Thresher?
Credit: Brian Douglas/Paramoun+Tulsa King Season 4 premiere’s most disturbing development begins when Thresher invites Margaret (Dana Delany) to accompany him to a governors’ conference in the Mariana Islands. Margaret reluctantly accepts, leaving Dwight behind while Thresher’s private aircraft departs. During the flight, everyone aboard, including the pilots, appears unconscious. Air traffic controllers repeatedly attempt to contact the aircraft without receiving a response.
Joanne eventually wakes Dwight with devastating news: Thresher’s plane has crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Neither Margaret nor Thresher is confirmed dead onscreen, although their chances of surviving such a disaster appear grim. The circumstances invite suspicion because everyone aboard loses consciousness, but the episode never identifies a mechanical failure, poisoning, or deliberate act of sabotage. One possible motive involves Thresher’s opposition to a proposed AI data-center development.
Earlier, Lieutenant Governor Amanda Clark (Gretchen Mol) informs him that a technology company continues pushing for access to Oklahoma farmland. Thresher refuses to cooperate. Could someone benefiting from that development have wanted him removed? It’s a plausible theory, especially because Clark could inherit the governorship if Thresher dies. Yet her frosty introduction to Dwight establishes political hostility, not involvement in an assassination.
Dwight’s enemies could be responsible, since Margaret’s death would hurt him while Thresher’s would cost him a political ally. But there’s no proof either was targeted. I’m more worried Margaret was caught in someone else’s feud, especially since losing her could push Dwight back toward his old ruthless ways. I also hope the writers resist turning every suspicious character into a convenient suspect. The incapacitated pilots are a genuinely unsettling clue, and the eventual explanation deserves more than another predictable mob betrayal.
For now, the mystery remains unanswered, while Dwight faces dangerous new rivals and the possibility of losing someone he loves. Was Thresher the intended target, or did someone engineer the crash to hurt Dwight through Margaret? Share your theories below, and follow FandomWire for more Tulsa King recaps and ending explainers.
