Anime viewership in every major region grew consistently from 2020 to 2025, according to the Anime Global White Paper 2026 by GEM Partners, based on a survey of 15,000 respondents in 15 countries. What makes this report all the more credible is the focus on viewer penetration (percentage of population), rather than rankings of popularity, providing a clearer picture of the penetration of anime in respective countries.

Now here comes the twist that may grab your attention: the United States failed to be among the top three. Instead, the rankings are topped by Japan, China, and India, reflecting a new emerging market and Asia-led consumption. According to this new report, Japan is coming on top as expected. As the country from where the anime originated, around 55 percent of the Japanese are actively watching anime, which demonstrates that it is not only an entertainment medium there, but has become a part of their culture as well. From television broadcasting to merchandise to even tourism, wherever you go, you will find that it has become a cultural phenomenon in people’s everyday lives.

China is taking the second spot with approximately 42 percent of viewership share, thanks to its advanced digital infrastructure. India is the biggest surprise there, though coming in the third position with around 41 percent of the viewership. An even more interesting thing is that the country has also seen a growth rate of more than 30 percent between 2020 and 2025, as per the report’s findings. Classic titles like Dragon Ball and Naruto are dominating among the Indian fans, with major streaming platforms like Netflix and YouTube driving the growth there.

Additionally, Netflix and Crunchyroll started releasing multiple titles with regional language dubbing, which further contributed to extending the reach of anime in India, making it a mainstream entertainment option rather than a niche one. Meanwhile, the United States is ranking outside the top three and even coming after countries like South Korea and Brazil.

In the US, anime is actually a recognized and very successful commercial entertainment option; however, as we have multiple entertainment options here, including Hollywood films, sports, and a whole lot of streaming platforms, all these probably limit the overall viewership share. Even with all that, America still remains the key revenue generator for anime worldwide, especially when it comes to merchandise and streaming platform subscriptions.

This hints that while some genres travel globally, others remain tied to specific cultural tastes. When it comes to the most-watched anime title, Detective Conan comes on top in multiple countries, including Japan, China, and South Korea, proving that even old classics have not lost their charm.

At the same time, newer series like Jujutsu Kaisen is also ranking well in all major countries, representing that fans nowadays are not limiting themselves to just one type of genre and show. Meanwhile, Dragon Ball continues to maintain strong popularity in countries like India and Brazil. Also, it should be remembered that streaming platforms also play a very big role in extending the anime’s reach. As per the report, Netflix is coming on top as the most used platform to stream anime series outside Japan and China.
