Contains spoilers from Thrash ending.
Tommy Wirkola’s disaster thriller Thrash turns a collapsing coastal town into a flood-filled nightmare where Hurricane Henry brings more than just rising water. Set in the small coastal town of Annieville, South Carolina, where Hurricane Henry turns a normal evacuation day into a full-scale survival nightmare. Released on Netflix on April 10, the movie follows multiple characters whose lives collide as floodwaters bring bull sharks into streets and homes.
The story begins as news spreads that Annieville is heading toward disaster, with Hurricane Henry rapidly intensifying and expected to make landfall. From there, the movie tracks three main survival groups: pregnant office worker Lisa Fields (Phoebe Dynevor), anxious and traumatized young woman Dakota Edwards (Whitney Peak), and marine researcher Dr. Dale Edwards (Djimon Hounsou), alongside three foster siblings trapped in another part of town. Below is a full breakdown of how the Thrash ending plays out and who survives.
Did Lisa and Her Baby Survive in Thrash Ending?
Lisa Fields is pregnant and on her way back from work when the disaster begins. As she FaceTime with her mother, we learn that she is a New Yorker, moved to her fiancé’s hometown, South Carolina, and works in the office of the McKay’s Meats plant. She is pregnant, and her “jerk” fiancé has left her alone in the small town. As she’s without any help or financial support, she has no choice but to work. Her concerned mother tells her to give a thought to water birth, just like her sister. However, we have to say Lisa’s song choice to calm her down is questionable.
As she drove past the townspeople following the evacuation order, her mother reminded her that she should have left earlier. Realizing the interstate was already closed, Lisa understood she was too late. As the hurricane worsens, Lisa gets trapped inside her car when a fallen tree blocks her escape route.
The situation becomes even more dangerous when sharks enter the flooded neighborhood. Several people attempt to rescue her but are attacked and killed by sharks in the water. While Dakota was trapped on the upper floor, she was forced to witness sharks entering the flooded streets and see multiple people killed while trying to help Lisa. Despite fear, she pushes forward and takes things into her own hands.
Dakota ultimately saves Lisa by going over the debris and using a knife to free her from the car. However, there is no time for safety as water levels continue rising and Lisa’s labor intensifies. As the water began to encroach on the upper floor, Dakota realized she had no choice but to retrieve the boat from the other side of the house.
Knowing her uncle’s research on sharks, Dakota uses distraction tactics. She gathered electronic vibrating items, such as an electric toothbrush, wrapped them in plastic, and threw them into the water to create diversions. In the meantime, she moved toward a boat. Just as she was almost attacked by a shark, she used a head-mounted flashlight to disorient the creature and narrowly avoided the attack.
Meanwhile, the room had already flooded with water, so Lisa was forced to leave the room. Eventually, as the sun rose, Lisa gave birth in the flooded water. Unfortunately, the pool of blood from the delivery attracted sharks, and they circled around her. Dakota defended them with a pointed harpoon, but then another shark overturned their boat.
Lisa and her newborn survive the immediate chaos due to continuous intervention and eventual rescue support.
How Lisa and Dakota Were Rescued from the Shark Attack?
Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou in Thrash | Credit: NetflixDakota’s storyline begins with isolation and trauma. Her father died when she was young, and the recent death of her mother traumatized her. She was unaware of the storm at first, and her friend refused to bring food. So, she left her home after a long time, when her neighbor warned her to evacuate. Her anxiety and agoraphobia worsened with the sound of sirens, making her hesitant to act.
Her uncle, Dr. Dale Edwards, is a marine researcher tracking a storm. He reached out to her when he was two hours up the coast for his work. At the beginning of the movie, Dale told his assistant that the sharks might have entered the area with the floodwaters. As they tracked the sharks, Dale mentioned a particular shark named Nellie, a pregnant great white shark he had been monitoring, must have entered too.
The real threat, however, wasn’t the storm but the bull sharks, which can drag victims underwater in seconds and kill them. While they were preparing to rescue in the heavy rain, her colleague asked what bull sharks fear most. Dale responded that they apparently fear larger sharks and that certain electrical currents can disorient them.
When their boat capsized, Lisa and Dakota faced a serious threat from other sharks. Just in the nick of time, Dr. Dale arrived with his team, hurling a taser into the water to neutralize the immediate danger. In a dramatic turn of events, as another bull shark approached to attack, Nellie, the larger white shark, attacked the bull shark. This diversion ultimately allowed Lisa, Dakota, and the baby to be swiftly pulled to safety.
How Did the Olsen Kids Survive?
Olsen kids in Thrash | Credit: NetflixThe three Olsen siblings, Ron, Dee, and Will, are trapped in their home with their negligent foster parents when the storm hits. Their foster parent, Billy, believes his house is fully protected due to reinforced glass, waterproof wiring, and a home generator. He dismisses evacuation warnings and tells the family it is just a little weather. But when the storm surge arrived, the house flooded completely. A wall of water shatters the glass and floods the whole house.
Ron suggested that the only way for them to stay safe was to go snorkeling. Their foster parents hurried to grab the snorkeling gear from the garage, but unfortunately, they encountered sharks during this effort. The children had a terrifying front-row seat as their foster mother was tragically killed, and Billy suffered a serious injury. They could only watch from behind a window as their caregivers faced this danger.
Inside the flooded house, the siblings struggle to survive as sharks enter the room. The siblings planned to retrieve the steak as bait or maybe guns. But the only catch is that they have to dive in the water to go down to the basement. Ron leads the effort to escape. As they rejoice in the tense moment that Billy is no more, Billy reappeared, still alive, with his “arm and butt cheek cleaned off.” We have to say it was one of the funniest scenes.
Their confrontation exposed Billy’s neglect and greed, including how he misused government subsidy checks of $1500 while feeding the children poorly and then enjoying steaks. During their fight, Billy fell into the water, where he was immediately taken by a shark. Ron then dives into the basement of the house and retrieves the steaks and the supplies, including a box. The thing inside the box turned out to be explosive dynamite. The siblings plan to use it to clear the sharks by tying it to the stake. The siblings planned to use it to drive away the sharks by tying it to the meat.
They threw the bait into the water, but no sharks were spotted nearby. However, Will realized that sharks are attracted to vibrations. The siblings jumped into the water to create movement, luring the shark toward the meat bait attached to explosives. The shark was killed in the explosion.
The Olsen siblings were finally able to escape the house and survive the disaster. The next morning, they ran from the house by driving away from the flooded area.
What Does the Thrash Ending Scene Suggest?
Thrash | Credit: NetflixAfter Hurricane Henry passes, Annieville begins to recover. Floodwaters slowly recede, and survivors emerge into daylight. Lisa, her baby, Dakota, and others are rescued after the storm’s peak destruction. However, the ending does not provide full closure.
A final shot reveals another storm system forming in the distance. This means that Hurricane Henry was not an isolated event but part of a continuing pattern of escalating weather disasters.
The movie concludes with powerful themes that Nature is increasingly unpredictable and aggressive, and our control over disasters is fundamentally limited. The sharks also serve as a stark symbol of environmental imbalance, cutting through urban floodwaters and demonstrating how ecosystems are deteriorating under extreme conditions. While the characters may survive, the underlying truth is that the world remains unstable and fraught with challenges.
While the ending clearly hints at a possible sequel, especially with the final storm reveal, it ultimately depends on Netflix’s decision, which will likely be based on viewership performance. A continuation could expand the idea of escalating climate disasters, but the current movie already feels like it has said what it needed to, even if not always in the smoothest way.
The concept of combining a hurricane with shark attacks is fun and visually engaging, and the movie delivers some strong set-piece moments. However, the movie’s execution is not always consistent. The tone shifts between serious disaster drama and over-the-top action and sarcasm, which did not land equally well for many of us viewers.
