The Testaments Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

Agnes (Infiniti) knows how important her bleeding will be for her family and friends, and for a moment, she tries to hide the evidence. However, before she can dispose of the trash, Paula (Amy Seimetz) walks into the room. When Paula accuses her of scheming, Agnes fesses up. Paula teaches her how to use feminine products, even showing her own vulnerability in the process. She also hands Agnes a cover for her pads, made by Tabitha (Amy Landecker) before her passing. Agnes remembers her adoptive mother telling her about her adoption.

Rosa (Kira Guloien) walks into the room, and Paula reveals Agnes’ secret. They celebrate together, but Paula is already working on positioning Agnes in the marriage market. She will need to get her teeth whitened, get new clothes, and see special doctors. Agnes goes to school and meets her new guardian, Garth (Brad Alexander), and the two lock eyes.

When she arrives at school, Agnes tries to walk past Daisy. However, her Pearl wants to follow her up the staircase to announce her change to a green. When Agnes tells Daisy no, Daisy goes to one of the Aunts. Upstairs, Agnes rings a church bell, signaling to everyone her transformation. When she returns to the first floor, she is celebrated for her blessing by the entire school. Agnes tells the Aunts of her transformation, and she receives the green pin.

During lunch, Hulda (Isolde Ardies), Shunammite (Rowan Blanchard), and Agnes chat. Agnes tries to use her new status to hang out with Becka (Mattea Conforti), but her friend is testy, blowing her off to go to another fitting. The group is called in to handle a correction for Daisy, who admitted her cursing to the Aunts. Aunt Vidala (Mabel Li) calls out Agnes for not guiding her Pearl, and Agnes leads the other Plums in chanting “dirty girl” at Daisy. Overwhelmed by the experience, Daisy turns Agnes in for not turning her in earlier. The Aunts take both girls away.

In the bathroom, Aunt Gabbana (Zarrin Darnell-Martin) forces the two girls to brush their teeth out with soap. After the Aunt leaves, they wash their mouths to get the taste out. Daisy apologizes, but Agnes yells at her for telling the Aunts. She tells Daisy to return home to Canada, but Daisy reveals she has no home to go back to.

Paula takes Agnes to the dentist, telling her about what it means to be a woman. She’s called into the room by Dr. Grove (Randal Edwards), who is also Becka’s father. When she sits down in the chair, he comments that Agnes’ teeth are perfect and that she can help with Becka’s time becoming a green. However, he then makes a comment about her breasts and rubs his hand over them while pretending to adjust her X-ray vest. Afterwards, Agnes starts having nightmares about a future husband.

Later that night, Aunt Lydia (Dowd) wakes Agnes up and takes her to an initiation ceremony in the middle of the night. She is brought into a massive room with a baptism pool. She is surrounded by cloaked figures who surround the pool. Agnes is baptized by Aunt Estee (Eva Foote) as the girls around the pool remove their masks. Becka, Jehosheba (Shechinah Mpumlwana), Miriam (Birva Pandya), and Talia (Pamela Estrada) are among those who support Agnes when she leaves the pool.

In the bathroom, Agnes is happy that Becka was supportive during the initiation. She’s thrilled that Becka is talking to her again, in part because she thought Becka was mad at her. However, Becka admits that she does not want to get married and that she did not want this for either of them. Agnes lays out a future where the two girls are mothers together, but Becka continues to stare longingly at Agnes even as they leave.

In the night, Daisy carves a map of the school in the bathrooms. When a guard walks in to check the stalls, Daisy successfully hides. However, when she returns back to her bed, it seems like the girl in the bed next to her is awake with her eyes wide open. They do not acknowledge each other but just stare at each other until Daisy turns away.

Agnes is brought home, where Garth smokes outside the residence. She chastises him for smoking, and he apologizes. He then offers her congratulations before she walks inside. Once in the family room, she sees all the commanders of the region are present. Agnes is forced to reveal her secret to all of them, including her father (Nate Corddry).

Was The Testaments Season 1 Episode 2 worth watching?

Yes, The Testaments gets better in “Perfect Teeth,” specifically around the concept of voyeurism. In “Perfect Teeth,” The Testaments becomes more of an artistic flex than the premiere, allowing for longer takes, better blocking, and a more artistic lens to the episode. “Perfect Teeth” also digs into the warring ideas within Agnes as she tries to hold her excitement and fear in the same breath.

Chase Infiniti soars in “Perfect Teeth,” and it’s the kind of performance that should get her on the Emmy radar. She handles the sexual assault at the hands of her best friend’s father with incredible nuance. It’s a harrowing scene, especially within the context of the first episode. We know that Agnes has been brainwashed to believe that assault like this is because of the women of Gilead, so rather than turn on the man assaulting her, she believes it’s a shortcoming of her own.

THE TESTAMENTS - “Precious Flowers” - In the halls of Aunt Lydia's premarital preparatory academy, the finest in Gilead, Agnes is assigned to mentor a new Pearl Girl, and a fragile alliance begins. (Disney/Steve Wilkie) CHASE INFINITI, MATTEA CONFORTI

This becomes even more resonant after her initiation, where she is forced to “celebrate her fertility” in front of dozens of men. In this context, The Testaments shows a world where Agnes is displayed by her father to his friends and colleagues, which reflects well on his own power. While we know that Agnes is not the biological daughter of the man or his first wife, the power of the moment is still attributed to the men who guide her.

The leering does not stop with the men, though it takes on a melancholy through the eyes of Becka. Her frustration with the process was already obvious in episode 1, but “Perfect Teeth” clarifies some things for the young woman. There must have been a small part of Becka that hoped Agnes could become her Martha, and in turn, they could live out a love affair in secret. However, with Agnes’ growth to become a green, that dream is now dead. Worse, they will be split up to serve the men of Gilead.

Daisy might be in trouble if the other Pearl tells on her. It would be some karmic justice, but then again, we want to root for her. Hopefully, that interaction will not become a sword of Damocles that overshadows the entire season. Her choice to reveal what happened on Agnes’ special day also speaks to her need to be believed by the Aunts. That action and the subsequent accusation of Agnes keeping secrets should help her remove any suspicion.

The Testaments begins on April 8, 2026. “Perfect Teeth” released on April 8, 2026, as part of a three-episode drop.
