The Boys Season 5 brought with it the supe-killing virus that could change the game for good. The final season’s stakes are as high as the potential of the virus: wiping everyone out in battle. However, the ending of The Boys Season 5, Episode 2 gave us one last twist that favoured the antagonists.
The Boys’ Soldier Boy wakes up after the virus supposedly “killed” him. The possibility of his surviving could be linked to his genetic mutation after experiments with Compound V-One. The same did not happen with members of Teenage Kix who had Compound V in their system. So what is V-One?
Gen V brought Thomas Godolkin back, one of the scientists who experimented with Compound V. This supe-inducing chemical was created during WWII by Nazi Frederick Vought. After the defeat of the Germans, Vought migrated to America, where they created V-One, the first Compound V iteration that functionally renders supes near-immortal.
The following supes are likely to survive the virus for being associated with Compound V-One in one way or another.
1 Soldier Boy Keeps Proving He’s Unstoppable
Soldier Boy surviving the supe-killing virus is just another example of the badassery the character continues to display. He genuinely is far above the rest of the supes in terms of resilience and fighting prowess. Despite being briefly affected by the virus, he gets up at the end of Episode 2, suggesting that Compound V-One might be the most potent variant.
2 Thomas Godolkin Is a Canonical V‑One Survivor
A still from Gen V | Amazon StudiosA textbook example of Compound V-One, Thomas Godolkin is the only known recipient of the V-One strain who survived the experiments in 1967. This success alone puts him as a primordial supe who is immune to any variants of the supe-killing virus that will target future batches of V.
3 Marie Moreau Is Tied to the Project Odessa Experiment
A still from Gen V | Amazon StudiosMarie Moreau is one of the few documented survivors of the Project Odessa experiment that was designed to push Compound V to new extremes. This high-stakes experiment implies that her Compound V is qualitatively more powerful than many of the usual V-batches.
4 Ryan Butcher Is the First Natural-Born Supe
A still from The Boys | Amazon StudiosRyan Butcher is the first supe that was born from natural birth rather than having V injected into their blood. This potentially makes him immune to the killer virus that was specifically created to fight against V-injected supes. Ryan could effectively be what is needed to stop Homelander in case the virus doesn’t work.
5 Homelander Is Vought’s Most Refined V Experiment
A still from The Boys | Amazon StudiosHomelander has repeatedly been framed as Vought’s most refined experiment from birth. The running theory suggests his creation came at a time when Vought took every dirty trick and shortcut in genetic mutation to create the “perfect supe.” They were extremely successful as Homelander is Vought’s deadliest weapon, alleging that his Compound V is a step above the rest and is likely a variant of V-One.
Here is a summary of the characters discussed.
| Soldier Boy | Carries V‑One, which likely shields him from the virus. |
| Thomas Godolkin | Sole confirmed V‑One survivor, so his adapted biology probably resists the virus. |
| Marie Moreau | Tied to Project Odessa and experimental V, possibly giving her V-One type resistance. |
| Ryan Butcher | Born with powers and no injected V, so he may not trigger the virus at all. |
| Homelander | Vought’s most refined V experiment, which may grant him partial or full resistance. |
Can the virus be weaponized against humans at all?
No, the virus is specifically engineered to latch onto Compound V.
How did Butcher get his hands on the virus?
The virus was first created inside Vought’s Gen V ecosystem.
Could the virus ever be “cured” or turned around?
Once taken hold, the virus rapidly destroys the supes, making it difficult to cure them.
