The Best Tim Curry Animated Movie of All Time Is Now Free on Streaming

One of Tim Curry’s finest animated performances is currently available to watch for free in the U.S. FernGully: The Last Rainforest is streaming on Tubi, giving viewers another chance to hear Curry as Hexxus, the pollution-feeding villain of Bill Kroyer’s 1992 environmental fantasy. For money, it remains Curry’s best animated movie, pairing one of his most memorable voice performances with a film whose environmental message and hand-drawn world have endured remarkably well. Curry died at his Los Angeles home this week at 80, leaving behind a career that stretched across theater, movies, television, music, and an enormous body of voice work (via Reuters).

FernGully also has fresh life beyond streaming. Amazon MGM Studios announced in April that a live-action adaptation is in development, with Marielle Heller set to write and direct. No casting or release date has been announced (via PEOPLE).

Released on April 10, 1992, FernGully: The Last Rainforest follows Crysta (Samantha Mathis), a fairy living in an Australian rainforest who discovers that humans are not extinct after all. She accidentally shrinks logger Zak (Jonathan Ward), who gradually understands the damage his crew is inflicting on the forest. Their bigger headache is Hexxus, an ancient entity released from a tree who feeds on pollution and grows stronger as the destruction intensifies (via Rotten Tomatoes and 20th Century Studios).

Curry is joined by an unusually stacked voice cast. Robin Williams voices Batty Koda, while Christian Slater, Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong, Grace Zabriskie, and Tone Loc also feature. The movie was not a Disney-sized blockbuster, but it held its own. Its reputation has endured reasonably well, too. FernGully currently holds 67% from critics and 64% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDb users give it 6.6/10 from roughly 38,000 ratings (via Rotten Tomatoes). The environmental angle was no afterthought. Producer Wayne Young traced the project back to bedtime stories inspired by the subtropical woodland around Byron Bay, while Kroyer later led his team on a seven-week research trip through the Australian rainforest. Tim Curry’s death on August 26, 2026, at his Los Angeles home brought an end to one of the more unpredictable careers in modern entertainment.
