The Runner Ending Explained: How Did Maia Outsmart the Caller in the End?

Prime Video’s The Runner arrived on September 2, 2026, and it barely lets its lead catch her breath. Directed by Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald and written by Mark Gibson, the thriller stars Gal Gadot as Maia Marten, a London attorney raising her diabetic son Noah (played by Harry Potter star Rory Wilmot) as a single mother.

Damian Lewis plays the man on the other end of her phone, known only as the Caller, with Phoenix Di Sebastiani as Tafa, the witness at the heart of Maia’s biggest case. A routine morning run turns into a nightmare when a stranger tells Maia he has Noah.

Maia gets a package with a gun in the middle of the park, and she has to run across London to the hotel where her star witness is currently staying under protective custody. She has to kill him, and there is one hour on the clock to save her son. Did she really go through with it?

How Did Maia Outsmart Damian Lewis’ Caller?

Initially, it seems like Gal Gadot’s Maia went through with the Caller’s ask. She overcame several obstacles, including a car accident and her phone being stolen, and even became a wanted woman in the process. Then she walks into the hotel room, raises the gun, and shoots Tafa as the Caller watches him go down on his phone.

However, it is all revealed to be a performance. The setup begins in the opening minutes, when Maia tells a panicking client to stop talking and control the narrative, which is exactly what she spends the movie doing. When she is on the subway during her run, she steals a phone, types a message for Ted, and hands it to a stranger. Maia suddenly has a team the Caller knows nothing about.

Her tearful confession about being a killer herself was the second move. When he is about to drop the plan with Maia, she convinces him with another of her troubled family histories. She reveals that it was she who shot and killed her father. Her mother took the blame and went to jail, so that she could have a life. By this point, the Caller is convinced that he has the perfect pick.

However, she was actually writing the plan for Ted and the authorities in lipstick on a restaurant window. She asked them to use blanks and fake blood.

The rest is execution. She swaps the real bullets for blanks while calmly preparing her gun. Tafa wears blood packs and drops once she fires. Maia realizes that Noah is in the same building, reaches him in time, and comes face to face with the Caller. He is arrested, Ted is waiting outside, and Maia ends the day by throwing her phone away.

Who Is Damian Lewis’ Caller in The Runner?

The Caller never gets a name in The Runner. For most of the runtime, Damian Lewis is only a calm voice in Maia’s ear, and the film hides his face until the final stretch. What he does tell her is that he is a freelancer hired by Boyd, a man standing trial for the murder of two young women.

Maia is the reason that case is airtight. She turned Tafa against Boyd, and his testimony is what will put him away. So, the Caller plans to remove Tafa, and the prosecution collapses. That is the job he hands her. He sets her a peculiar rule that she should keep moving on foot, and he asks her not to go to the police or seek help.

The Caller is tech-savvy, and he makes sure she cannot slip out of the plan. Her phone was compromised before the film even properly begins, and when she tries to reach her colleague Ted, she learns he is hacked too. The Caller even uses AI to clone Maia and Noah’s voices so nobody around them suspects a thing.

When she stumbles midway through the plan, the Caller even reveals his contingency plan. He has a bomb that would take out Tafa and plenty of bystanders with him.

Why Did the Caller Target Gal Gadot’s Maia?

Maia was not a random pick, and the Caller is happy to explain why as she runs. She built the case that flipped Tafa, which means she is one of the few people who can walk into a protected witness’s room without anyone reaching for a weapon. But access is only half of his plan.

Maia is a former pentathlon champion, and the film establishes it early when she outsprints another runner across the park. Then there is her family history. Maia’s mother is in prison for killing her abusive father, and the Caller reads that history as proof that this is a woman who understands what violence costs and can still go through with it. Add a diabetic son she is raising alone, and the Caller has the perfect pressure point to squeeze.

While the movie did go off the rails with Gadot’s unbelievable speed and stamina, the ending somewhat saves the movie. M.N. Miller of FW was still unhappy with the “predictable script, exposition-heavy dialogue, and Gal Gadot’s limited emotional range” in our review of The Runner.
