The 7 Best PS3 Games of All Time, Ranked

Remember when the PS3‘s library included everything from brutal boss fights and elaborate stealth missions to open-world crime sprees and heartbreaking road trips? Sony’s console arrived in 2006 and went on to deliver some of the most memorable experiences of its generation, to the point that some of its biggest games remain worth revisiting even today.

With the benefit of hindsight, we’re looking back at seven PS3 games that defined the console for us. These are our picks for the best of the best, ranked with, as always, a little room for debate.

7 Demon’s Souls

Before Dark Souls became a household name among action RPG fans, Demon’s Souls introduced players to the unforgiving kingdom of Boletaria. Released in North America in October 2009, FromSoftware’s adventure demanded from its players infinite patience, careful stamina management, and a willingness to lose progress while learning its many deadly encounters.

Hidetaka Miyazaki’s work on this game laid much of the groundwork for the Soulslike genre, from cryptic storytelling and punishing bosses to online invasions and player messages. Looking at how many games have borrowed from its design, it’s difficult to imagine today’s action RPG scene without the original PS3 release.

6 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots arrived in June 2008, bringing Solid Snake’s long-running story to a close. The ageing soldier returned for one final mission in a world where private military companies had turned warfare into a business, with Liquid Ocelot threatening to bring the Patriots’ system crashing down.

The battlefield stealth, OctoCamo, weapon customization, and Mk. II gave Snake plenty to work with, even if Kojima’s famously lengthy cutscenes sometimes threatened to overwhelm the gameplay. And after years of being trapped on PS3, the game finally reached modern platforms with Master Collection Vol. 2 in August 2026, giving a new generation a chance to experience Snake’s farewell.

5 God of War III

Released in March 2010, God of War III brought Kratos’ original Greek saga to a bloody conclusion, with Santa Monica Studio delivering some of the PS3’s most spectacular boss fights. The opening battle against Poseidon set the tone for an adventure filled with brutal finishers, enormous set pieces, and a Kratos hell-bent on tearing Olympus apart.

The Blades of Exile and the Nemean Cestus made tearing through Olympus every bit as satisfying as it was outrageous, while the battles against Hades and Zeus gave Kratos’ revenge story the scale it deserved. And with the original trilogy finally getting a remake, a new generation will soon get to experience the games that made Kratos a PlayStation icon.

4 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Released in October 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves sent Nathan Drake on a search for the lost city of Shambhala, with Naughty Dog building on the original game’s foundation in almost every department. The story moved between ruined temples, busy cities, and a spectacular train sequence that remains one of the PS3’s most memorable moments.

The climbing, shooting, and cinematic sequences flowed together with a confidence that few action adventures had managed at the time. Drake’s chemistry with the supporting cast also gave the globe-trotting adventure a personality that made its quieter moments as enjoyable as its set pieces.

3 Grand Theft Auto V

When Grand Theft Auto V launched in September 2013, Rockstar gave PS3 players three protagonists, an enormous Los Santos, and the freedom to approach heists in different ways. Michael, Franklin, and Trevor each brought their own problems to the story, while switching between them made the city feel like a place with several lives unfolding at once.

More than a decade later, the game continues to attract players through GTA Online, regular updates, and successive releases on newer consoles. With GTA 6 now finally scheduled for November 19, 2026, the wait for Rockstar’s next mainline entry has only reinforced how long GTA 5 has remained part of gaming culture as a whole.

2 The Last of Us

Joel and Ellie’s journey through a Cordyceps-ravaged America made The Last of Us one of Naughty Dog’s most affecting games. Released in June 2013, its combination of scarce resources, stealth, and desperate combat gave the relationship at its center room to develop without making the infected or human enemies feel like minor obstacles.

Sony has since remastered the game for PS4, remade it as The Last of Us Part I for PS5 and PC, and brought its story to television through HBO’s successful adaptation. Few PS3 games have been revisited so extensively, and the continued interest in Joel and Ellie today speaks to how strongly their original journey connected with players.

1 Red Dead Redemption

Released in May 2010, Red Dead Redemption followed John Marston, a former outlaw forced to hunt down his old gang to protect his family. Rockstar San Diego set the story in 1911, when the frontier was disappearing, and built an open world that made travelling across the American West feel like an adventure in itself.

Between bounty hunting, poker, shootouts, and unexpected encounters on horseback, there was always a reason to put the main story aside for a while. But it was Marston’s struggle to escape his past that stayed with players, making the final stretch of his journey one of the most memorable endings in gaming.
