Avengers: Doomsday Star Admits He Has No Idea What the Marvel Movie Is About

Alan Cumming, who is reprising his X-Men role in Avengers: Doomsday, has little idea what the actual plot of the highly anticipated Marvel movie is. This explains that the makers are heavily protecting the story, even from some of its own actors. Cumming told SiriusXM, “To be honest, I don’t fully understand the plot.“

The Emmy-winning Hollywood star wasn’t provided with a full screenplay, only the material related to his scenes. In his own words, filming his scenes was just mostly about ‘running around,’ so he is still in the dark about the Marvel movie. Cumming said in the interview, “There was a bit when we were shooting a scene, and it was one of the rare scenes when I was actually on the backlot and not in front of a blue screen.“

He added, “And this man came and said, ‘So right now Alan, these giant robots are blah blah,’ and started to tell me the thing, and I was like, ‘You know what, thank you so much, but just tell me where I point my, whatever I point. And I’ll do that. Really, I just know I’m here to run around.”

In Doomsday, Cumming reprises his role as Nightcrawler, 23 years after debuting as the mutant in X2:X-Men United. He didn’t return for any other X-Men movie, so this marks a big moment for both Cumming and his fans. He has previously discussed with Variety about how he turned into blue-skinned and tattooed mutant.

He said that initially it took about four and a half hours to apply advanced makeup, but later, the team was able to cut it down to 90 minutes. “Before, all of the tattoos were done by hand. They hadn’t decided on them before we started filming. Now, they just stick onto my face. It’s a game changer,” he said.

Alan Cumming told SiriusXM that he had a fun conversation with Florence Pugh at the Emmys regarding their characters in Avengers: Doomsday. As it turns out, he had a scene with Pugh’s stunt double, while the actress who returns as Yelena Belova also shared the screen with Cumming’s stunt double.

When Is Avengers: Doomsday Releasing in Theaters

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in the U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026. The Russo brothers return as directors for the new Avengers movie, with Stephen McFeely as writer. Although Marvel is closely guarding the plot details, the story brings together heroes from different Marvel franchises as three distinct universes collide. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, but not as Tony Stark or Iron Man. He is set to play Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom. The enormous ensemble includes Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men characters.
