Apple TV series Ted Lasso season 4 has taken AFC Richmond in a new direction. The titular American coach now finds himself coaching the club’s women’s team, called Lady Greyhounds. The season has, in many ways, the freshness of season 1, when Ted was still finding his feet (no pun intended) in England and with a new team.
The country and the city are familiar now, but the team is new, and the women are as rowdy and fiery as the men. Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 4, though, brought back two iconic characters from the earlier seasons. The appearances connect the new, ongoing storyline to the last seasons. Here’s who has returned and what it will mean for the rest of the season.
Trent Crimm and Dr. Sharon Fieldstone Make Surprise Returns
Trent Crimm and Dr. Sharon Fieldstone in Ted Lasso | Credits: Apple TVSo, former journalist Trent Crimm (James Lance) and therapist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) are the ones we are talking about. The episode, titled Greyhounds’ Day Off, has Crimm interviewing Sharon on his podcast, Through the Laces. After writing his book on Richmond, he left his job, and like many former journalists in the real world, he is a podcaster now. Sharon is his guest to promote her new book, Unlocking the I in Team: The Psychology Behind Team Building. Oh, and she is also a professor of sports psychology now.
Their appearance was surprising, particularly because neither of these characters had previously been named as one of the main recurring actors in season 4. In fact, these two were two of the characters whose return was deemed unlikely in season 4.
What Their Comeback Means for Ted Lasso Season 4
Trent and Sharon’s appearance is another way in which season 4 can bring back something of the original themes of the show without moving away from its new theme. These two individuals had played an important role in helping Ted develop as a person and a professional before. They can once again play a similar role and help the series revisit ideas about leadership and teamwork.
The homecoming of the two characters ties directly into the core issue that faces the Lady Greyhounds in episode 4. This is evident when Sharon talks about how cliques may emerge among the players because they try to create a community feeling as they face some stress. It is not long before this comes true, as members of the team indeed start forming cliques according to their positions.
In the beginning, Ted and Beard have difficulty understanding the idea of reuniting the players into one team again. However, Ted finally figures out that the team should have something to work for as an aim, which prompts the coaches to arrange a pub quiz. It gives the team something to focus on as they compete against a team of men who openly objectify women.
Their appearances in Episode 4 should be considered as just cameos rather than any indication that they will come back to the show’s regular cast. It does, however, allow the new season to get in touch with some old characters. Now, we think Jamie Tartt may make a comeback too in a cameo, even though his absence was explained in episode 2. Ted Lasso season 4, as of August 26, holds a 90% on the Tomatometer.
