Hell’s Kitchen is getting its old gang back together. The original Defenders are reuniting in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3. Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Finn Jones, and Mike Colter are all confirmed to return, bringing Marvel’s street-level superhero team together for the first time since its 2017 Netflix crossover. The development marks another milestone in Marvel’s gradual reintegration of its former Netflix heroes into the MCU. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage have already returned through Born Again, leaving Finn Jones’ Iron Fist as the final original Defender awaiting his MCU comeback.
Colter missed the NYCC panel due to a scheduling conflict, but his return completes the original quartet. For a team that managed only one eight-episode crossover series, The Defenders has cast a remarkably long shadow.
The Defenders Made Crossovers Personal
Credit: Sarah Shatz/NetflixThe Arrowverse turned superhero crossovers into appointment television through events such as Invasion!, Elseworlds, and Crisis on Infinite Earths, bringing together characters from multiple CW series. Marvel’s The Defenders took a different route in 2017. Rather than assembling an army of costumed heroes to confront a multiversal catastrophe, the eight-episode Netflix series united Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist against the Hand, a criminal organization threatening New York.
The premise drew its strength from personalities that had already been established across four individual shows. Matt Murdock’s Catholic guilt, Jessica’s caustic skepticism, Luke’s moral pragmatism, and Danny Rand’s mystical convictions frequently made cooperation harder than fighting their enemies. That friction was the selling point.
Showrunner Marco Ramirez described the series as a collision of four distinct worlds rather than a conventional superhero team-up. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he discussed the challenge of bringing together characters whose individual shows possessed markedly different identities. The experiment was hardly flawless. The Defenders holds 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its ensemble chemistry while questioning its uneven pacing and underwhelming villains.
Nevertheless, its character-first approach offered something the Arrowverse’s increasingly gargantuan events sometimes sacrificed: room for heroes to argue, distrust one another, and gradually earn their alliance. Its greatest achievement was making four incompatible personalities feel like a team without sanding away their differences.
The Defenders Return for Daredevil’s Final Season
Charlie Cox in Daredevil: Born Again (2025) | Image via Disney+The reunion arrives at a particularly consequential moment for Matt Murdock. Entertainment Weekly’s NYCC report details the announcement and footage screened for attendees. The footage offers a glimpse of how much has changed. The preview also teases the team’s reunion through a police-badge sequence, with Jessica Jones pointing out the missing fourth badge. It is a playful nod to Luke Cage’s absence from the scene, even though Colter is confirmed to return.
Matt appears imprisoned, wearing a makeshift Daredevil costume fashioned from an orange prison uniform. The preview also features Wilson Fisk and Benjamin Poindexter, whose more comic-accurate Bullseye costume suggests another dangerous confrontation awaits. The reunion also arrives under bittersweet circumstances. Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again will conclude with its third season in 2027, following September’s announcement that the series would not continue beyond that chapter (via TheWrap). Charlie Cox has already found a cheeky way to address the disappointment.
He joked during the NYCC panel, referencing the fan movement that helped keep interest in the character alive after Netflix canceled the original series (via ComicBook):
I imagine the ‘Save Daredevil’ campaign will be gearing up for Round 2.
The original #SaveDaredevil movement followed Netflix’s 2018 cancellation, long before Cox resurfaced in Spider-Man: No Way Home and eventually received his Disney+ revival. This time, however, Marvel has an opportunity to give the Defenders something their original crossover never received: a proper long-term consequence within the wider MCU.
Their reunion could provide a satisfying conclusion to Matt’s struggle against Fisk without necessarily ending the characters’ individual journeys. Marvel has not announced another standalone Defenders project. For now, the heroes who once proved that Marvel could make a crossover feel personal are returning for Daredevil’s final television chapter.
