Spider-Man: Brand New Day Officially Shatters Star Wars’ $900M Box Office Record

Nobody saw this coming a month ago. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed $900 million at the domestic box office, becoming only the second film in history to get there. The first was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, back in 2015.

The Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Sadie Sink movie closed its fifth week with $30.4 million, leaving it at $899.7 million through Thursday (via Deadline). The outlet reported that the movie crossed the $900 million mark with its Friday collections.

Destin Daniel Cretton‘s film is expected to add around $18 million across the Friday to Monday stretch. That leaves one movie in front of it at the domestic box office. The Force Awakens finished its North American run with $936.6 million, a record it has held for more than a decade.

Brand New Day is now about two weeks of ticket sales away from taking it. But it has already taken one Star Wars record off the board entirely, and that one was not close.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Becomes the Fastest to $900M in the U.S.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens needed 50 days to reach $900 million. But Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now done it in just 36 days. That is a two-week improvement on a record that stood for a decade, and it is the one Sony can claim right now.

Avengers: Endgame is the useful comparison here, because it never made it at all. The 2019 crossover finished its domestic run at $858.3 million, still the third-biggest ever, and it stopped more than $40 million short of the line Brand New Day just crossed.

The speed records have been piling up since July. The film hit $1 billion worldwide in six days, the second-fastest ever, and it lost that one to Endgame by a single day. It cleared $1 billion from overseas markets alone in 12 days, again second only to Endgame.

Then it reached $2 billion worldwide in 17 days, a mark Endgame set in 11. On almost every measure of pure speed, Brand New Day has scored. Notably, it is the first movie of the 2020s to achieve these big records.

Brand New Day Is Expected to Finish As the Highest-Grossing Domestic Movie

Spider-Man: Brand New Day needs $36.9 million more to pass The Force Awakens and become the biggest domestic release in history. It made $30.4 million last week alone, with the Labor Day weekend still to come.

Projections have the film finishing somewhere around $950 million, which would clear the record with room to spare. The film has also been running ahead of The Force Awakens‘ pace all summer. Here is where the domestic top five stand today.

Worldwide, the picture is just as strong. Brand New Day sits at roughly $2.34 billion, which makes it the third-highest-grossing film ever released, behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. Some hopeful fans believe the movie could become the first film to reach $1 billion domestically.
