Sony Officially Reveals Upcoming Movie That’s More Priority Than Spider-Man 5

Sony has made its immediate Spider-Man roadmap belongs to Miles Morales. When Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja was asked when Tom Holland’s next live-action Spider-Man movie might arrive, he offered no date and instead pointed fans toward the franchise installment that is actually coming next (via Variety):

That makes Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Sony’s next concrete Spider-Man priority on the release calendar. Sony Pictures Animation has officially scheduled Miles Morales’ trilogy finale for June 18, 2027, and confirms that the movie is currently in production. Spider-Man 5, by comparison, remains undated. Ahuja did not formally declare Beyond the Spider-Verse “more important” than Holland’s sequel, but when the studio chief is asked about Peter Parker and answers by reminding everyone that Miles has a movie next year, the near-term focus is difficult to miss.

Beyond the Spider-Verse Is Sony’s Next Spider-Man Movie

Sony is treating Beyond the Spider-Verse as the conclusion to the animated saga that began with 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and continued with 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The first installment won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, while its sequel received another nomination in the category. The finale finds Miles hunted by Miguel O’Hara’s Spider Society and desperately trying to reunite with his family after being stranded away from home. Sony’s official synopsis promises a journey across the “wildest reaches of time and space,” picking up the unresolved conflict that left Across the Spider-Verse hanging in 2023.

Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are directing, while Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham wrote the screenplay. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Jinko Gotoh are producing, keeping many of the architects of the earlier movies involved for Miles’ final chapter. That June 2027 date also gives audiences something Spider-Man 5 cannot offer yet: certainty. Sony has a movie actively being made, a release date already circled, and an unfinished Miles Morales story ready to be completed.

Spider-Man 5 Is Successful Enough to Take Its Time

The curious part is that Sony is in no desperate need to cool Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become a gigantic theatrical success, reaching $2 billion worldwide in only three weekends and climbing to roughly $2.4 billion globally by early September (per Variety). Yet Ahuja still refused to pin down the next Holland movie. His “couple years usually” comment suggests Sony sees no reason to rush another live-action installment, especially when Beyond the Spider-Verse already gives the studio a major Spider-Man theatrical event in 2027.

That approach also prevents the two branches from stepping on each other’s toes. Miles gets room to finish a critically acclaimed trilogy, while Holland’s Peter Parker can return later instead of being pushed straight back onto the calendar after Brand New Day. So the headline’s ‘more priority’ claim is about Sony’s immediate release focus, not an official ranking between Peter and Miles. Spider-Man 5 remains part of the conversation, but Beyond the Spider-Verse is the Spider-Man movie Sony can point to right now with a date, a production status, and a promise that audiences will see it next year.
