James Bond Writer Officially Hints New 007 Actor’s Nationality (It’s Not Henry Cavill)

The next James Bond may still be hidden behind one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets, but screenwriter Steven Knight has now dropped a useful clue about the kind of actor stepping into 007’s tuxedo. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme (via Deadline), the Peaky Blinders creator said he loves that Bond “is British,” while also admitting that knowing the identity of the actor makes writing the screenplay “a little bit easier.” Knight refused to name the star, but his comments strongly suggest Amazon MGM is preserving the spy’s British identity as the franchise enters its post-Daniel Craig era.

That clue does not suddenly put Henry Cavill back at the front of the queue. Cavill is British, but at 43 he clashes with the direction repeatedly reported for the reboot. Variety has reported that Amazon MGM and director Denis Villeneuve are looking on the younger side, with the studio previously showing interest in actors who could carry Bond through several films over many years. 

Steven Knight’s Comments Point Back Toward a British Bond

Steven Knight was careful enough to avoid giving away the name, but he did little to dampen speculation that the decision may already be made. Asked whether writing becomes easier when he knows the actor, he replied:

When pressed further, he declined to elaborate. His next remark is the more revealing one. Knight described writing Bond as doing his “duty for king and country” and added, “I love that it’s British and it’s not DC or Marvel.” That does not amount to an official confirmation that the actor himself must hold a British passport, but it makes abandoning the character’s British identity look highly unlikely. The rumor mill has consequently narrowed around names such as Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson, and Jack O’Connell, while Australian actor Jacob Elordi remains an unusual exception in reports about the search.

Gary Oldman has also claimed (via Variety) that a new Bond has already been “picked,” while expressing support for his Slow Horses co-star Lowden. Amazon MGM has yet to announce anyone officially.

Henry Cavill has spent years hovering around Bond speculation, and there is history behind it. He famously auditioned for Casino Royale before Daniel Craig won the role, leaving fans to campaign for him whenever the tuxedo became vacant again. Yet time has become the problem that charisma cannot solve. Forbes noted that Cavill is now 43, while the current search favors someone young enough to remain Bond across several movies.

Variety has also reported that Amazon MGM is looking for a younger Bond, with actors in their 20s and 30s repeatedly surfacing during the casting process. That approach makes business sense when a single 007 era can stretch for well over a decade; Craig was 38 when Casino Royale arrived in 2006 and remained Bond through No Time to Die in 2021. Amazon MGM officially confirmed in May that the search for Bond was underway, with Villeneuve directing, Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing, and Knight writing the script. No actor has been publicly announced yet, which means every specific name still belongs in the rumor column.

Knight may know who is putting on the tuxedo, but he is guarding the answer like MI6 paperwork.
