Seth MacFarlane Reveals Family Guy Movie Future Under One Condition

Family Guy has been a cornerstone of animated television since its 1999 debut on Fox, now running for 24 seasons and counting. Its signature style blends cutaway gags, sharp satire, and unpredictable humor, keeping it relevant for over a quarter century. Despite the show’s enduring popularity, creator Seth MacFarlane recently revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he keeps the movie idea as a professional reset button, something he’ll only make after a major career failure.

When asked if the Family Guy movie could happen while the show is still on TV, MacFarlane said yes, but only under one specific circumstance. MacFarlane has known what the movie would be for over a decade, saying, “The Family Guy feature film is something that’s still always in the back of my head.” 

He told The Hollywood Reporter his ultimate condition for bringing the Family Guy movie to the audience and said: 

Oh, yeah. I always kind of assume that if I have a really dismal professional failure, like I produce a movie or a show that just fails so badly, the only thing that can cleanse the palette of the audience is the Family Guy movie. That’s when I’ll do it.

After a quarter century on the air, Family Guy remains a ratings powerhouse, so MacFarlane sees no reason to end it yet. For now, the movie remains on his to-do list, but it’s not coming until he needs it as a career reset. Fans who have been waiting since 2007 will need to wait for MacFarlane’s next big professional stumble before the Quahog crew heads to theaters.
