Seth Jarvis scored 3:56 into overtime as the Carolina Hurricanes survived another dramatic Stanley Cup Final game, evening the championship series with the Vegas Golden Knights at one game apiece.

Jarvis one-timed a pass from Shayne Gostisbehere over the outstretched blocker of Carter Hart on a power play, seconds after captain Jordan Staal had drawn a tripping penalty off of Game 1 hero Tomas Hertl.

Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski and Staal each scored, Gostisbehere had two assists, and Frederik Andersen made 23 saves for the Hurricanes, who are 6-0 in overtime this post-season.

Down 2-0 halfway through the final period of regulation, Carolina scored three unanswered goals, but Vegas’ Mark Stone tied the game with 1:21 left in the third to send the game to overtime.

Brett Howden scored twice and Mitch Marner had two assists for the Golden Knights, who also lost top-pairing defenceman Brayden McNabb due to an apparent facial injury. Hart made 22 saves.

McNabb takes puck to the face

McNabb left the game 10:52 into the first after taking a Nikolaj Ehlers slap shot to the face. The defenceman laid on the ice for a couple seconds before skating off the ice in a hurry holding his nose.

He probably didn’t realize it in the moment, but it could have been much worse: Ehlers’ 87-mile-per-hour shot nicked McNabb’s visor before bashing his nose.

The 35-year-old was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation — if he is out for Game 3, that’s a giant loss for Vegas. McNabb is the Golden Knights’ No. 1 penalty killer, and had three assists and two blocks in 21:13 of ice time in Game 1.

Vegas somehow escapes first with lead

In explaining his club’s uncharacteristic performance in a 5-4 loss on Tuesday, Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour noted the abnormally high number of mistakes made by both teams. The Golden Knights made plenty of errors — the Hurricanes made more.

You can bet that topic dominated video sessions on Wednesday because Game 2 began as a classic chess match, the exact environment Carolina thrives in.

The Hurricanes held their opponent to one shot for the first 13 minutes of the opening frame, forcing a ton of turnovers with sustained pressure.

Their play should have yielded a more favourable scoreboard, but that’s hockey.

Vegas, forced to flip countless pucks out of their own end, had one Hail Mary connect as if it were Brady finding Moss in the end zone. Marner launched a puck high in the air to a streaking Howden, who skated in on a breakaway and beat Andersen with a wrist shot on the glove side to make it 1-0 at 13:33.

It was the Golden Knights’ second shot of the period, and the last one they would record until the middle frame.
