Sandro Wagner confirmed as new Hannover 96 coach

Hannover 96 have confirmed the appointment of Sandro Wagner as their new head coach.

The former Germany assistant and Augsburg head coach has signed a two-year deal with the 2. Bundesliga club.

“Following the decision to change coaches last weekend, it was important to us to take the necessary time to arrange the succession. We carefully considered who would fit us and what that person would need to bring, both in the current situation and, of course, in the longer term," said Hannover 96 sporting managing director Jonas Boldt.

“Sandro Wagner is certainly a personality who is well known in German football. What convinced us enormously was how intensively he had familiarised himself with Hannover 96, our squad and the season so far, meaning he was exceptionally well prepared for our discussions. He is someone who works meticulously and is passionate about the task.

“The discussions quickly went into great depth, and we came to the very clear conclusion that Sandro is the right man for us. Together with him, we want to successfully shape the sporting future of Hannover 96.”

Wagner, whose most recent coaching job was at Augsburg, where he was dismissed in December 2025 after just over five months in charge, said:

"Hannover 96 is a club with real presence – with a great tradition, a very vibrant fan culture and an environment hungry for success. Of course, I thought very carefully about what my next step in football should be.

“After the first conversations with those in charge, I already had the feeling that 96 would be a really good fit. The structured, professional process over the past few days has reinforced those thoughts.

“I’m really looking forward to the task because I’m convinced that, with the right energy, we can make and achieve a lot of good things here. So I’d like us to take the path that begins now together as a team – with the fans and with everyone at the club. We want to act bravely and as a united team.”
