Gladbach close in on new head coach after fourth straight Bundesliga loss

Rouven Schröder has confirmed that Borussia Mönchengladbach have reached a verbal agreement with Eugen Polanski's expected successor.

Borussia Mönchengladbach are closing in on appointing Eugen Polanski’s successor after starting the season with four straight Bundesliga defeats.

After Polanski was sacked following last week's 5-0 defeat to Freiburg, his former assistant Jan-Moritz Lichte took charge of Saturday's home game against Mainz, which ended in a 3-4 loss.

Speaking to reporters after the game (via SID), Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder confirmed that the club are close to appointing Polanski's successor.

“We have reached a verbal agreement,” Schröder said, adding that he expects the deal to be finalised “soon”.

“In this day and age, though, you have to make sure the signature is actually on the contract,” he added.

Asked whether the candidate in question is still under contract with another club, Schröder replied:

“You almost always have to speak to the former club, but perhaps not in this case.”

Schröder already ruled out Horst Steffen and Christian Titz as candidates before kick-off.

With Die Fohlen bottom of the Bundesliga table on zero points and with a 6-16 goal difference, the priority is to appoint a coach who can deliver results quickly.

“If a coach feels more comfortable with a back four, then we’ll play with a back four. And if it’s a back three, then a back three. What matters to us is this: we need results,” Schröder said.
