Despite impressing following his return to Werder Bremen, Niclas Füllkrug wasn't among the 44 players called up by Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Speaking after Werder's 3-2 win over Augsburg on Saturday, in which he scored for the third game in a row, Füllkrug didn't seem too fazed by his omission.
“I’m not expecting a call at all. I don’t need any calls,” Füllkrug told Sky Germany when asked about the national team.
“I play here for Werder. That’s the most important thing for me. Everything else is out of my hands. I don’t want to comment on it either – I don’t think that’s cool.”
Werder head coach Daniel Thioune believes Füllkrug could become an option for Klopp if the striker continues to perform at his current level.
“With the national team coach, it’s certainly the same as with me: You can impress him and put pressure on him with your performances,” Thioune said.
“And if Fülle continues to perform like this, then he’ll certainly remain in the national team’s wider circle of candidates.
“I can understand that the national team coach initially wants to rely on the players he doesn’t know yet. He already knows what he’s going to get from those he does know. But if Niclas Füllkrug keeps getting on the scoresheet week after week, then the national team coach will certainly make his way up the A1 towards the north at some point,” the Werder coach added.
Füllkrug has scored 14 goals in 24 appearances for Germany. His most recent appearance for the national team came in June 2025, when Germany lost 2-0 to France in the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff.
