Sandra Bullock’s Complete Relationship Timeline: All You Need to Know

Sandra Bullock recently appeared at CinemaCon to promote her new movie, Practical Magic 2, with Nicole Kidman. It was probably her first public appearance since the unfortunate passing of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, in 2023.

Before dating Randall, Bullock had dated a few high-profile stars, including some of her co-stars from movies. Interestingly, the media didn’t catch on to these relationships until later, even though the actress dropped hints during her press interviews.

During an interview with Cosmopolitan, Bullock opened up about her relationships. Bullock shared that she had a hard time being “just friends”. She shared that she would pursue a relationship if both the man and woman share great chemistry and are single. She shared that movie sets were breeding grounds for relationships and added that one needed a solid set of rules going in. She shared:

I have a hard time being just friends. My feeling is, if youre both single and you’re not hurting anyone, do it, have a great time. But if you’re committed, walk away. You have to have a really good moral backbone. […] Movie sets are breeding grounds for that kind of stuff, so you just have to have a good set of rules going into it.

Tate Donovan (1990-1994)

Tate Donovan and Sandra Bullock first met on the set of their movie Love Potion No. 9 in 1990. The O.C. star was even engaged to Bullock at one point, but they broke off their relationship after four years. A year later, Bullock spoke about Donovan during an interview with Vanity Fair. She shared:

I adored Tate so much. It’s like they say, there’s one person in your life, and Tate and I are closer than any two people I’ve ever experienced in my life. There’s nobody that means more to me, and I know for a fact that I mean the most to him in that certain way.

It was Donovan who introduced her to Jennifer Aniston, with whom Bullock became best friends. Donovan and Aniston dated briefly, too. The actresses joked about this during their Interview Magazine conversation, with Bullock sharing, “We were introduced by our former boyfriend. I say ‘our’ because you and I both partook of this one human being.”

Troy Aikman (1995, 2014)

Sandra Bullock dated NFL star Troy Aikman in the mid-’90s. The former Dallas Cowboys player was also linked with Bullock in 2014 after her divorce from Jesse James.

Don Padilla (1995)

Don Padilla was a film technician who was photographed alongside Sandra Bullock when they appeared on the red carpet of The Net premiere in 1995.

Matthew McConaughey (1996-1998)

Sandra Bullock dated A Time to Kill co-star Matthew McConaughey. While Bullock was a star then, McConaughey was in his first lead role in a drama. They dated from 1996 to 1998. McConaughey had the hots for another co-star from A Time to Kill before he pursued a relationship with Bullock.

He dated Ashley Judd, who played his on-screen wife, for a brief time. However, he later became close friends with Bullock and was drawn to her. She still maintained a close relationship with the actor. She shared with Cosmopolitan:

It’s the work we both put in. There’s a great amount of respect and love. I feel very cared for by Matthew. No matter where he is in his life or where I am in mine—he could be married—I know we would stay close.

The Interstellar actor also expressed great respect for his co-star. At the Guys Choice Awards 2014, he spoke highly of her, “I’ve worked with you. I’ve tried to kiss you, successfully and unsuccessfully… I’m glad to have known you for over twenty years.”

Bob Schneider (1999-2001)

Sandra Bullock and musician Bob Schneider were a thing at one point, with the actress commenting, “As celebrities go, Bob and I have a very low-key relationship. It’s something I learned through trial and error” (via Cinema.com). However, other details about her relationship with the country musician were not revealed publicly.

Ryan Gosling (2002-2003)

After filming Murder by Numbers, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling dated for some time from 2002 to 2003. When asked about a romance with Gosling during her Cosmopolitan interview, she joked:

Let me see if I can answer that politically and correctly. We’re friends…If you were to add the word just, it would probably be a bit of a lie. So I’d say we’re friends.

Gosling and Bullock’s relationship caught attention as she was 16 years his senior. In 2011, he shared with The Times UK that he considered Bullock and Rachel McAdams to be two of the greatest girlfriends he’d ever had. He shared, “I had two of the greatest girlfriends of all time. I haven’t met anybody who could top them” (via Us Weekly).

Jesse James (2003-2010)

Sandra Bullock was previously in a scandalous marriage with motorcycle builder and Monster Garage host, Jesse James. The ex-couple tied the knot in 2005 and filed for divorce in 2010 following allegations by several women that James had engaged in extramarital affairs with them while he was married to Bullock.

In light of the allegations, James publicly apologized to Bullock. He took full responsibility for his actions and sought forgiveness from Bullock and their children. James discussed his “f**ked up choices” in an interview with Men’s Journal, admitting that it was unfair for him to even be in a relationship (via ABC News).

However, the reality TV star later revealed in an interview with Howard Stern that The Blind Side actress did not love him either. James attributed his infidelity to trust issues with Bullock. Reflecting on the Oscar-winning actress’s award acceptance speech, he said (via OK Magazine):

Yeah, she could stand there in front of the world and say she loved me, but in my mind, I was thinking, yeah bullsh*t… ‘You don’t love me.’

In 2010, Bullock filed for divorce, citing a “conflict of personalities.” The ex-couple had been in the process of adopting a son, who was living with them at the time. The Miss Congeniality actress proceeded with the adoption as a single parent.

Chris Evans (2014)

Chris Evans was, for some reason, romantically linked with Sandra Bullock in 2014. The rumors ran wild, and both of them humorously addressed the rumors, even posing for a photo together at the time. She jokingly told ET, “We’ve since married and it started breaking apart, so we separated” (via Us Weekly).

She further shared, “We filed for divorce, and I hope everyone can respect our privacy. But we’re going to remain friends and share responsibility of the farm animals we’ve taken on, because you just can’t abandon the animals.” Evans told Access Hollywood that he had a “big crush” on Bullock during his childhood days.

Bryan Randall (2015-2023)

Before returning to Practical Magic 2 and other ongoing projects, Sandra Bullock was on a break from her Hollywood career. Her world was turned upside down when her long-time partner, Bryan Randall, passed away in 2023 after a three-year-long battle with ALS.

Bullock and Randall met at her son’s birthday party in 2015. He was a photographer hired to capture the event. They began officially dating a few months later. They made their red carpet debut for the premiere of Our Brand Is Crisis in Los Angeles.

In November 2021, she talked about her relationship with Randall during her appearance on Red Table Talk. She shared that he was a great “example” to her children, sharing:

I have a partner who’s very Christian and there are two different ways of looking at things. I don’t always agree with him, and he doesn’t always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him.

A source told Closer that Bullock has struggled personally since the death of her partner. A friend of Bullock reported that she had to take over household duties that Bryan Randall used to take care of. The source shared, “The hardest have been the simple things like Bryan getting the kids ready for school and making breakfast.” A 2024 report from Us Weekly suggested that Bullock is ready to date again after Randall’s passing.
