‘Sailor Moon’ Meets ‘Berserk’ in Crunchyroll’s Official New 21-Episode Dark Fantasy Anime

Magic Knight Rayearth returned to screens on October 7 with a brand-new anime adaptation, bringing one of CLAMP’s most beloved fantasy manga to a new generation. Crunchyroll is streaming the E&H Production anime, which is confirmed to run for 21 episodes. The story follows the journey of three girls who are transported to the mysterious world of Cephiro.

The series has a colorful magical-girl appeal associated with Sailor Moon, and at the same time, it ventures into surprisingly dark fantasy territory, making a comparison to Berserk less far-fetched than it might initially seem. Honestly, Magic Knight Rayearth’s story blends the elements of Sailor Moon and Berserk so well that it could be an interesting fantasy anime release of this year.

Magic Knight Rayearth Is Crunchyroll’s Next Must-Watch Fantasy Anime

The new Magic Knight Rayearth is based on CLAMP’s original manga, which was first published in 1993. The story centers on Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji, the three girls who go on a school field trip to Tokyo Tower. However, their lives take an unexpected turn after they are transported to Cephiro, the place that can turn conscious and subconscious thoughts into reality.

Soon, the three girls learn they are brought here to become Magic Knights and save Cephiro from destruction. On the surface, it seems like just another fantasy anime, but it’s much darker and deeper than that. It explores themes like betrayal, sacrifice, political conflict, and more that will appeal to modern anime fans.

Magic Knight Rayearth first received an anime adaptation in 1994. TMS Entertainment produced the anime, and it ran for two successful seasons. However, Cephiro’s story remains relevant and appealing even after all these years. That’s why the new adaptation matters: it gives modern anime fans another chance to experience such an incredible story.

Since Magic Knight Rayearth is already well-regarded within the anime community, there’s no doubt that fans will tune in to watch the anime. Also, E&H Production, the studio behind the series, is known for producing some interesting anime. The studio also gave us Ninja Kamui, which truly surprised the fandom with its early episodes.

On top of everything, Crunchyroll’s involvement gives the series a major international platform. With 21 episodes, the series will have every opportunity to establish Cephiro and explore the story’s conflicting, complicated heart.

How Magic Knight Rayearth Blends Sailor Moon and Berserk’s Dark Edge?

Sure, comparing Magic Knight Rayearth to Sailor Moon and Berserk may sound strange at first. But it makes sense when you look at the series’ tone and themes.

Like Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth follows three girls who develop extraordinary powers and are thrust into a magical world. Each protagonist has a distinct personality, abilities, and transformations, giving it the colorful appeal of classic magical-girl anime.

At the same time, CLAMP’s story is also willing to explore some darker ideas. The girls are not simply returning home after fighting off the villains. Instead, their journey through Cephiro forces them to confront things like war, death, and sacrifice. At every step, they have to make difficult choices and live with the consequences. And this tonal shift is where the Berserk comparison comes into play.

Obviously, Magic Knight Rayearth is no way as violent as Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy masterpiece. However, both stories understand that fantasy and magical worlds can be extremely brutal. Beloved characters can lose loved ones, face betrayals, and suffer terrible things in these worlds.

This contrast is what makes Magic Knight Rayearth so beautiful. It carries the sparkly appeal of Sailor Moon while also delving deeper into violent themes like Berserk. However, since the anime has premiered just recently, we’ll have to wait and see how well E&H Production and Crunchyroll blend these two themes.
