Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins received his long-overdue Oscar for crafting the visuals of the movie. And this movie is easily one of Deakins’ best works. Along with Villeneuve, Deakins created a believable world that feels lived-in rather than serving as spectacle. Nearly every frame seems carefully composed. The deliberate pace allows one to take in the world and also gives the movie more room to explore themes of loneliness and what it means to be human.

K is quiet, isolated, and emotionally restrained. Gosling communicates much of the character’s inner conflict without relying on conventional dialogue.

That loneliness also produced the movie’s most enduring internet moment, the aforementioned meme. The scene has K sitting alone while the holographic Joi (Ana de Armas) tells him, “You look lonely. I can fix that.” Internet culture turned this poignant moment into something jocular. But the scene proves that beneath its spectacular futuristic imagery, the movie is concerned with the very human desire to feel that our lives have meaning.
