In the world of One Piece, some of the strongest examples of love come from mothers who are willing to risk everything for their children. Across the series, Eiichiro Oda has shown many different sides of motherhood, from heartbreaking sacrifices to years of protection and guidance.

With that said, here are the five best mothers in One Piece, ranked from No. 5 to No. 1 based on their sacrifices, influence on their children, and impact on the story.

5 Queen Otohime Fought to Give Shirahoshi a Better Future

Queen Otohime was a loving mother who wanted her children to grow up in a world without hatred between humans and fish-men. During the Fish-Man Island Arc, she spent years trying to bring the two groups closer together.

Her relationship with Shirahoshi makes her even more important. Otohime knew that her daughter carried the power of Poseidon, one of the Ancient Weapons, but she never treated Shirahoshi as a weapon. Instead, she taught her children to show kindness and forgiveness. Otohime takes fifth place because her influence reached far beyond her family. However, the mothers above her made sacrifices that were more directly focused on protecting their children.

4 Curly Dadan Loved Luffy and Ace Like Her Own Sons

Curly Dadan was never the soft and gentle type of mother. Garp forced the mountain bandit to look after Ace and Luffy, and she often complained about the two boys. Behind that rough attitude, however, was someone who cared deeply about them.

Her actions made that clear several times. During the Gray Terminal incident, Dadan risked her own life by running into the burning area to help Ace. After Ace’s death at Marineford, her grief became even more obvious. Dadan ranks above Otohime because she gave Luffy and Ace something they badly needed: a home. She was not their biological mother, but her actions showed that family in One Piece is not always about blood.

3 Vinsmoke Sora Sacrificed Herself to Save Sanji’s Humanity

Vinsmoke Sora faced a terrible situation before her children were even born. In the Whole Cake Island Arc, Sanji’s past reveals that Judge wanted his children to become emotionless soldiers. Sora strongly opposed the plan and took a dangerous drug to counter the genetic modifications.

The drug did not completely stop the modifications, but it worked on Sanji. He was the only one of the Vinsmoke children who kept his emotions and kindness. That sacrifice became a major part of Sanji’s character. His kindness, compassion, and refusal to become like his brothers can all be connected to the humanity Sora fought to protect. She ranks third because her sacrifice helped shape the person Sanji became.

2 Bell-mère Gave Everything to Protect Nami and Nojiko

Bell-mère’s story is one of the clearest examples of what it means to choose your children over yourself. A former Marine, she found Nami and Nojiko as war orphans and decided to raise them as her daughters.

Her final choice during the Arlong Park Arc remains one of the most painful moments in the series. When Arlong demanded money from the villagers, Bell-mère did not have enough to pay for herself and both girls. She could have denied having children and survived, but she openly called Nami and Nojiko her daughters instead.

Her sacrifice became one of the main reasons Nami eventually found the courage to fight for her freedom. Bell-mère takes second place because she knowingly gave up her own life to protect her daughters.

1 Portgas D. Rouge Made the Ultimate Sacrifice for Ace

Portgas D. Rouge made one of the greatest sacrifices any mother in One Piece has made. After Gol D. Roger‘s death, the World Government wanted to find and eliminate any possible child of the Pirate King. Rouge was carrying Roger’s child, Ace, and knew that giving birth too soon could put him in danger.

She managed to keep Ace in her womb for 20 months. This incredible sacrifice allowed the authorities to believe that Roger had no surviving child. Rouge eventually gave birth to Ace, but her body could no longer handle the strain. She died shortly after he was born. Chapter 550 reveals the details of Rouge’s sacrifice and makes her story even more heartbreaking.

Rouge takes the top spot because her sacrifice allowed Ace to live when the World Government was determined to erase Roger’s bloodline. Her sacrifice remains one of the strongest examples of a mother’s love in One Piece.
