Gerard Valkyrie spent most of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity looking completely unkillable, and for a good stretch of the fight, he basically was. Every captain thrown at him seemed to make him stronger. Then Yhwach decided he didn’t need him anymore, and that was that.

What happens to the Schutzstaffel’s resident tank in Episode 7 titled “The End 2” isn’t a battle loss in the usual sense. It’s Yhwach quietly pulling the plug on a power he only ever lent out in the first place, ending Gerard Valkyrie faster and more brutally than anything Byakuya, Kenpachi, or Toshiro managed to do during the entire fight.

Bleach TYBW: Gerard’s Miracle Made Him a Nightmare to Put Down for Good

For most of the episode, Gerard is the wall nobody can get past. Byakuya Kuchiki, Toshiro Hitsugaya, and Kenpachi Zaraki throw everything they have at him, and it barely slows him down. His Schrift, designated “M” for The Miracle, doesn’t just make him durable; it makes damage actively useless against him. Every serious hit he takes gets converted into more size, more mass, and more raw power, so beating him down the normal way only ends up feeding the monster further.

Even his sword, Hoffnung, channels the hope of everyone nearby into something that punishes whoever strikes it, turning the crowd’s own desperation into a weapon against them. At one point, his head gets pierced clean through by an entire wall of coordinated blades under Byakuya’s command, and his headless body shatters into pieces on the spot.

The group barely gets a second to breathe before he reforms out of a shower of scattered spirit particles, somehow bigger and angrier than he was before the hit landed, filling the sky above the battlefield like a second sun made of pure spiritual pressure. It’s the sort of scale that makes the whole battlefield feel small and fragile by comparison. It’s the kind of fight that makes you wonder if there’s an actual answer to Gerard at all, or if the whole point was to show three captain-class fighters getting completely outmatched by a single Sternritter.

Hitsugaya freezes him solid more than once, Kenpachi Zaraki knocks him clean off his feet, Byakuya lands what should be the killing blow with Senbonzakura, and none of it sticks for more than a few seconds. Gerard just keeps climbing back up bigger each time, and the episode makes sure you feel exactly how hopeless that loop is before it yanks the rug out from under everyone in the room, Gerard included.

How Yhwach’s Auswählen Turned Gerard Into a Giant Skeleton

The twist is that nothing the Gotei 13 or the Visored do actually beats Gerard. Across the battlefield at the same time, Yhwach is busy absorbing Ichigo Kurosaki’s combined Quincy and Hollow powers, and somewhere in the middle of that process, he casually triggers his third Auswählen. It’s less an attack and more of a repossession. Since Gerard’s Schrift was handed to him by Yhwach to begin with, Yhwach can simply take it back the moment he feels like it, and that’s exactly what happens here.

There is no warning, no dramatic buildup, no final clash to make it feel earned, which somehow makes it sting even more. One second Gerard is a mountain of armor and muscle that three captains together couldn’t put down for good, and the very next second, all of that mass simply disappears. His flesh gets stripped away almost instantly, leaving nothing behind but a towering, hollow skeleton before it crumbles under its own weight.

It’s an oddly quiet, almost anticlimactic death for someone who spent the whole arc regenerating from literally anything thrown at him, and it happens without him ever getting the chance to fight back against the one person who actually mattered.

Jugram Haschwalth had already lost his Schrift to that same Auswählen back in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity Episode 6, so seeing Gerard get the same treatment here just confirms the pattern: Yhwach isn’t tying up loose ends; he’s discarding everyone who helped him, family included. Gerard, who was secretly the actual heart of the Soul King this entire time, ends up as a discarded husk of bone in the same corner of Wahrwelt where the fight against him took place, with none of the shinigami who bled to bring him down even realizing what actually finished him off.
