Another chapter of Rooster is officially on the way! The comedy-drama starring Steve Carell has been renewed for Season 2, and the first season hasn’t even reached the finish line yet! So, it seems like HBO is quite confident about the show’s long-term potential (via Variety). 

Rooster is a character-driven drama about Greg Russo, a commercially successful novelist who takes up a temporary job as a writer-in-residence at a small college. But his real motive is to connect with his daughter, who is going through a painful divorce

Why HBO Renewed Rooster Before Season 1 Even Ended? 

Rooster performed incredibly well right out of the gate, and its first four episodes averaged about 5.8 million U.S. viewers. Now, that kind of momentum is rare for a new series in today’s crowded streaming landscape (via Variety). 

But thanks to the love and appreciation people have for The Office star Steve Carell, plus a genuine liking for the show, a Season 2 is already possible. Critics have praised the actor’s performance, and although audience reactions are slightly mixed, overall they’re positive. 

It’s the heartfelt drama and dry humor that made Rooster one of the most talked-about comedies this year. The Season 1 finale is scheduled for May 10, 2026, and anticipation among fans about what’s to come is already building!

Though there have been no official casting announcements for Season 2 of Rooster, Steve Carell will likely return because he’s the main character. The premise revolves around him and his relationship with his daughter, so removing him would not make sense. Apart from Carell, the core ensemble of Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, and Charly Clive could also reprise their roles.

In most cases, early renewal decisions are made with the intention of keeping the original cast intact. Now, predicting what might happen in Season 2 is a bit more challenging because the first installment has not concluded yet. But maybe Greg could hold a long-term position at the college, and we could also see Katie’s personal life after the fallout from her divorce.
