It’s fair to say that Resident Evil Veronica was one of the standout reveals of the seventh edition of Summer Game Fest. Excitement surrounding the remake of this beloved survival horror classic has already pushed the game past one million wishlist items on Steam. The anticipation is at an all-time high, and fans can’t wait to see how Capcom manages to reimagine Claire and Chris Redfield’s terrifying adventure. However, if you’re someone hoping the remake would bring back the switchable first-person and third-person perspectives feature from Resident Evil Requiem, there’s some disappointing news on that front.

There were a number of reasons behind the success of Resident Evil Requiem. Not only did the game feature the return of Leon S.Kennedy and Raccoon City, but it also introduced Grace Ashcroft, a stronger focus on survival horror, new gameplay mechanics, and stunning visuals. However, one feature that blew everyone’s mind was the ability to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives.
This was quite a dramatic change for the series. In the previous entries, Capcom had always stuck to a third-person perspective, but all of that changed with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which introduced the first-person approach. Players expected the tradition to continue with Requiem, but Capcom allowed players to freely choose how they wanted to experience the game.
What was the benefit of this feature? Well, players who looked for a more immersive and terrifying experience could stick with the first-person view, where every encounter felt life-threatening. On the other hand, those who wanted more action could switch to third-person, which made combat feel more fun.
One might expect that, considering the positive reception to this feature, it would make a return in Resident Evil Veronica, since the remake also revolves around two playable protagonists. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case. While chatting with GamesRadar during the Summer Games Fest, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed that the remake is being developed as a third-person experience. This was quite a shock as the game’s debut trailer was a first-person segment.
Now, to be fair, this decision aligns with Capcom’s previous remakes, all of which have been designed around a third-person perspective. Still, it’s quite disappointing to see that such a well-received feature was absent from a remake that seemed like a natural fit for it.
However, don’t give up hope just yet, gamers. Resident Evil Village launched in a first-person perspective before Capcom later brought in a third-person mode through the Winters’ Expansion DLC. There’s a chance that Resident Evil Veronica could receive a similar treatment down the line if enough players show interest. For now, it seems like Claire and Chris Redfield’s return will be an experience from over the shoulder.
Why Did Capcom Decide to Remake Resident Evil Veronica?
Resident Evil Veronica was always a priority. | Credits: CapcomThe announcement of a Resident Evil Veronica remake might have caught many fans off guard, even though rumors of the project had been floating around for a while now. Let’s not forget the fact that Code Veronica is a spin-off within the franchise. Many fans were expecting Capcom to remake other mainline entries instead. With
However, in an interview with DayOne, Hirabayashi stated that Capcom has always viewed Resident Evil Veronica as an entry that holds the same importance as the franchise’s mainline entries. As the team continued revisiting classic games, bringing the fan-favorite spin-off for a modern audience remained one of its key priorities.
Capcom has still kept a lot of details about the remake under wraps, but Hirabayashi has teased that players can expect some elements and design philosophies from the Resident Evil 2 remake to carry over. Given the developer’s impressive track record of acclaimed releases in recent years, there’s every reason to believe that this remake will be another great addition to the series.
