Sony Pictures has officially begun development on 24 Jump Street, the long-awaited next installment in the hit R-rated action-comedy franchise, as per a report from Variety.
The project continues the story that began with 21 Jump Street and continued in 22 Jump Street, bringing back the series’ signature meta humor and undercover-cop chaos. Producer Neal H. Moritz also teased fans with this picture:

While the project is still in the early stages, here’s everything we know so far.

When Will 24 Jump Street Arrive in Cinemas?
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street / Credits: Sony Pictures ReleasingNot anytime soon. 24 Jump Street is still in development, and Sony has not announced an official release date. The wait has already been a long one, with more than 10 years passing since 22 Jump Street was released in 2014.
During that time, several sequel ideas were discussed, but none moved forward, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain. While the new movie is finally in development, fans will likely have to wait a little longer before Hill’s Schmidt and Channing Tatum’s Jenko return to the big screen. Fans shouldn’t expect the new movie to arrive in the theaters at least before late 2027 or early 2028.
24 Jump Street: Who’s Returning From the Cast?
While Sony has not officially confirmed the cast, Variety reports that Hill and Tatum are expected to return as the unlikely partners who made the first two films such a hit. Ice Cube is also in talks to reprise his role as the no-nonsense Captain Dickson, a character who delivered some of the franchise’s funniest moments.
At this point, casting deals have not been finalized, so nothing is set in stone just yet. Even so, it’s hard to imagine a new Jump Street movie without the chemistry of this trio.
Story Details and What to Expect From 24 Jump Street
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street / Credits: Sony Pictures ReleasingSony is keeping the plot under wraps, so there are no official story details just yet. We can expect plenty of jokes about the long gap between the new movie and the last movie, which was released in 2014, and how Schmidt and Jenko have changed over the years.
Why Did They Skip 23 Jump Street?
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street / Credits: Sony Pictures ReleasingThe makers likely skipped 23 Jump Street as a joke that plays directly off the ending of 22 Jump Street. In the film’s final gag montage, the series mockingly imagines a whole string of ridiculous future sequels — set in places like medical school, culinary school, firefighter school, dance school, seminary, and even outer space, a video game, and an animated series.
That ending basically turns the franchise’s sequel formula into the punchline, so skipping ahead instead of making a straightforward 23 Jump Street is being widely seen as part of the same meta-humor. In other words, the “missing” 23 Jump Street fits the franchise’s self-aware style: rather than seriously continuing in order, the series leans into parodying the very idea of endless sequels.
However, there were actually real plans for a 23 Jump Street movie at one point. The project was reportedly intended to be a crossover with the Men in Black franchise, combining the worlds of the undercover cops and alien-fighting agents.
However, those plans eventually fizzled out, particularly after Men in Black: International underperformed at the box office, making the crossover less appealing for the studio. As a result, Sony moved forward with 24 Jump Street instead, turning the missing 23 Jump Street into yet another meta joke for a franchise.
Interestingly, Tatum said in an interview with ComicBook that the cancelled crossover project was “the best script” he has ever read for a third movie. As to why it was delayed, he told Variety that the oversized budgets and producer fees were the culprits.
Now, however, things seem to have changed behind the scenes, with the team finally moving forward with 24 Jump Street.
