Bourgault, 23, was one of 15 players across the NHL who filed for arbitration, and the only one in Ottawa to do so. His new contract is only worth league minimum with the big club next season, but the decision to file for arbitration was clearly about getting a raise in the AHL, where he had a base salary of $90,000 in 2025-26.

It’s highly unlikely that Bourgault will crack the NHL roster out of training camp this fall; barring any injuries, he will start the season with the Senators’ farm team in Belleville, where he set career highs in 2025-26. Playing on the top line with Arthur Kaliyev, the league’s leading goal scorer, Bourgault had 57 points (25 goals, 32 assists) in 70 games.

Bourgault, taken 22nd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2021 NHL Draft, was acquired by the Senators along with forward Jake Chiasson for Roby Jarventie and a fourth-round pick in the summer of 2024. The Montmagny, Quebec, native made his NHL debut with the Senators last December, recording three shots in 10 shifts against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
