Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers from One Piece manga.
Sanji has always been one of the Straw Hats’ strongest fighters, but Chapter 1197 of One Piece takes his abilities to another level. During his battle against Saint Killingham on Elbaf, he unleashes a devastating combination of Haki and flames, shattering the Holy Knight’s weapon and leaving him spitting blood.
Yet, the biggest reveal goes beyond raw strength. After years of putting everyone else before himself, Sanji finally learns to value his own body. That change brings out a frightening new side of the Straw Hat and gives him a power that makes the Monster Trio more dangerous than ever.
One Piece Chapter 1197 Gives Sanji a Huge Haki Upgrade

One Piece Chapter 1196 laid the groundwork through his memories of Emporio Ivankov, whose lesson about self-love forces Sanji to reconsider his habit of sacrificing himself for others.
Having grown up despising the genetic modifications that transformed his Vinsmoke siblings, Sanji wanted nothing to do with their enhanced bodies. However, his hatred of what they represented also made him treat his own body as disposable. Now, according to the spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1197, titled “Love Is Defense” (via @pewpiece on Twitter/X), that struggle comes full circle. Sanji recognises that protecting himself is just as important as protecting his friends.
That realization matters when Killingham coats himself in black Omen armor, which the chapter’s spoilers establish can only be destroyed by Conqueror’s Haki. Sanji’s Armament Haki alone isn’t enough to overcome the threat, forcing him to push his abilities further.
He produces a new type of flame on his leg, visually distinct from the familiar Ifrit Jambe, while his Armament Haki reaches an extraordinary level. When he blocks Killingham’s Longinus spear, its tip shatters under the impact. The force still knocks Sanji down, but he realises he can withstand attacks without feeling the pain he once would have.
Then comes the decisive moment. Black lightning flashes around Sanji as he launches a spinning back kick infused with his new flames and Conqueror’s Haki. The attack breaks Longinus’s shaft, smashes Killingham’s helmet, and leaves the Holy Knight spitting blood. It is a massive upgrade where Sanji has brought together his flames, extraordinary defensive strength, and Conqueror’s Haki in one devastating attack.

The most exciting part of Sanji’s power-up is how it strengthens his place beside Luffy and Zoro. One Piece Chapter 1197 gives the three fighters a clear distinction in their roles: Luffy overwhelms opponents with his offensive might, Zoro specializes in cutting them down, and Sanji can protect his crew while delivering devastating kicks of his own. Their abilities are different, but together they make the Straw Hats’ strongest fighting trio even deadlier.
Sanji himself embraces this idea when he resolves that Zoro should become Luffy’s sword while he becomes Luffy’s shield. It isn’t an admission that he belongs beneath the other two. Instead, it shows that Sanji understands exactly what he brings to the crew, and his latest upgrade makes that role far more formidable.
And that is also what makes his new power rival Luffy’s in a meaningful way. Each member of the Monster Trio now excels in an area that makes them irreplaceable. Each is a powerhouse in his own field, and together, they make the Straw Hats an even more dangerous force in the final saga.
The chapter’s message also fits the three characters beautifully. Luffy’s growth is tied to the philosophy of being yourself, Zoro’s path is about Mihawk’s lesson of “knowing yourself,” and Sanji’s lesson comes from Ivankov: to love yourself. The Straw Hat cook finally accepts that protecting others doesn’t mean neglecting his own life. Sanji isn’t simply becoming a stronger fighter; he’s becoming the shield Luffy needs, with enough offensive power to make his enemies fear him, too.
