Matt Damon’s Oscar-winning breakthrough Good Will Hunting (1997) is officially heading to Amazon Prime Video in the United States on November 1, 2026. Directed by Gus Van Sant, the 126-minute drama stars Damon, Ben Affleck, Robin Williams, and Minnie Driver. Its arrival is confirmed in TheWrap’s November streaming lineup.
The film follows Will Hunting (Damon), a troubled MIT janitor with extraordinary mathematical abilities whose greatest obstacle is his inability to confront his past. Nearly three decades later, it remains arguably Damon’s finest performance, supported by a 97% critics’ score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. There is also a fascinating Quentin Tarantino connection behind its creation. Although Good Will Hunting bears little resemblance to Reservoir Dogs, Damon and Affleck borrowed an important lesson from Tarantino’s filmmaking breakthrough to get their own screenplay produced.
How Quentin Tarantino Helped Inspire Good Will Hunting

The screenplay grew from a writing assignment Damon had started at Harvard, but the pair needed more than a compelling story to secure financing while retaining their leading roles. Their solution came from studying how Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) reached the screen. In a 2021 GQ career retrospective, Damon explained that Harvey Keitel’s involvement had helped Quentin Tarantino attract financing. Damon recalled, referring to therapist Sean Maguire:
We wrote that part that Robin eventually took.
He added that they originally called it “the Harvey Keitel part.” The character was deliberately flexible enough to accommodate an established actor. Damon revealed that the writers considered performers such as Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, and even contemplated changing the character’s gender if Meryl Streep became interested. Williams eventually accepted the role, providing the star power the young screenwriters desperately needed. Damon acknowledged that his involvement was what finally secured the green light.
The influence, therefore, was practical rather than stylistic. Tarantino’s success showed two aspiring filmmakers how a respected actor could unlock a production without forcing its unknown creators out of the spotlight. The gamble transformed their careers. Good Will Hunting earned nine Academy Award nominations and won two Oscars: Best Original Screenplay for Damon and Affleck, and Best Supporting Actor for Williams, according to Miramax’s official film page.

Why Good Will Hunting Still Tops Matt Damon’s Filmography
Credits: MiramaxMatt Damon has since delivered formidable performances in The Bourne Identity, The Departed, The Martian, and Oppenheimer. Yet Good Will Hunting possesses an emotional candor that his larger productions rarely attempt. Will’s mathematical brilliance initially appears to be his ticket out of working-class Boston. However, the film gradually reveals that intelligence has become his shield against intimacy, failure, and abandonment.
Williams’ Sean Maguire refuses to be intimidated by Will’s intellect, while Affleck’s Chuckie Sullivan recognizes that his friend’s greatest tragedy would be wasting opportunities others could only dream of. That tension gives the drama its enduring bite. Will can solve complex equations effortlessly, but accepting love and imagining a different future require considerably more courage.
Williams also brought invaluable spontaneity to the production. In the same GQ interview, Damon revealed that the actor improvised Sean’s final line:
Son of a b*tch, he stole my line.
Damon remembered immediately recognizing that the unscripted moment belonged in the finished film. The movie’s commercial achievements were equally impressive. According to The Numbers, it earned approximately $225.9 million worldwide against a $10 million production budget. Rotten Tomatoes also places it first in its ranking of Damon’s films by critics’ score, lending measurable support to its standing as his best-reviewed feature.
