SUMMARY

  • One Piece fans are excited to see Joe Manganiello play the role of Crocodile in the second season of live-action adaptation.
  • However, there is one aspect where Manganiello can face criticism from the One Piece fans.
  • This aspect includes Crocodile's cigar smoking habit as Netflix might not allow this in the series.

The recent revelation of Magic Mike actor Joe Manganiello joining the cast of One Piece live-action season 2 as Crocodile has brought a lot of comfort to the fans. Manganiello is a refined actor, and his performance as Crocodile would hopefully be one of the biggest highlights of Netflix’s One Piece season 2.

While fans are happy and excited to see Manganiello as Crocodile, they are still doubtful about one aspect of Crocodile’s character that could affect Manganiello’s performance. This aspect is Crocodile’s habit of smoking cigars continuously in the One Piece anime. It is a part of Crocodile’s identity and appeals to his broody and arrogant nature.

The creators of One Piece live-action need to clarify whether they will include Crocodile’s smoking habit in the series or not. Although it is crucial for his identity, the series might face certain problems because of it. This is because they have previously faced criticism for a similar thing with one of the major characters of the series, Vinsmoke Sanji, played by Taz Skylar.

The Importance of Cigar For Crocodile’s Identity

Crocodile is one of the longest-running antagonists in the history of One Piece. The character made his debut during the second saga of the series, but he is still a part of the narrative even though One Piece has entered its final saga. This in itself speaks for his significance in the story and his role in the conclusion of One Piece.

One of the major aspects that make Crocodile look more villainous is his habit of smoking cigarettes. Ever since he debuted in One Piece, he has been seen with a cigar, and while it may not be so noticeable, it works well with his overall appearance as a former warlord and the boss of Baroque.

While it certainly is an enticing characteristic, Eiichiro Oda was forced to remove it from the 4Kids dub version of the series. Besides that, the manga creator has made sure that whenever Crocodile makes an appearance in One Piece, he always has a cigar in his mouth.

Crocodile’s Habit of Smoking Cigar Might Affect Joe Manganiello’s Performance

Although there is no doubt that Joe Manganiello would do a great job in bringing Crocodile to real life, there is still a chance that he may face some criticism from One Piece fans. This is because he might not be able to replicate Crocodile’s appearance and his attire completely.

As mentioned above, Cigar is one of the most crucial pieces of Crocodile’s attire. However, Manganiello might not be able to use it because of Netflix’s policy of only using smoking for “reasons of historical or factual accuracy.” A similar thing happened with Taz Skylar, who plays Sanji in the series. Sanji is also an avid smoker, but this aspect of his character was removed from One Piece live-action.

It also became the main reason for the criticism of Skylar’s role as Sanji by One Piece fans. Thus, the creators of the series really need to address this criticism beforehand so that it doesn’t affect Manganiello’s performance as Crocodile in One Piece live-action season 2.

One Piece live-action is available to watch on Netflix.
