From Blood of Zeus to Record of Ragnarok, several anime follow the culture of retelling mythological tales. With his series Twilight of the Gods, Zack Snyder isn’t far behind either. His depiction of the thunder god Thor sets the series apart from its contemporaries. To say the least, the animated series isn’t a run-of-the-mill retelling of Norse mythology.

To add to that, Marvel’s portrayal of the thunder god falls flat somehow in contrast to Snyder’s series. This holds especially true when it comes to the sheer brutality outlined in the series. Most fans cannot help but draw a contrast between the two characters.

Zack Snyder is a celebrated director known for his notable works like Man of Steel, 300, and Justice League. From superhero to historical and mythological genre, his career spans over two decades. His series Twilight of the Gods is a modern retelling of the Norse mythology. The animated series outlines gore and violence and topples the conventional representations of Gods.

While acts of rebellion against towering figures aren’t uncommon, the series takes it up a notch. With its representation of gore and violence coupled with the Thunder God’s maliciousness, the series is unique in its way. It’s a refreshing take on Norse mythology that often glorifies and romanticizes it. And if fans’ reactions are anything to go by, the series is well-appreciated.

An X user @BlacktyonteXavi shared a clip of the Thunder God’s representation as a villain. From his brutality to his aggression, fans appreciated the portrayal of the character.

Zack Snyder’s portrayal of the Thunder God stands in contrast with Marvel’s representation of the character. While Snyder gave a more barbaric and brutal tone to his series by turning the character into a villain, Marvel nerfed the character in most ways.

Marvel fails Chris Hemsworth’s character through its representation of the Norse God

Apart from creating a whole cinematic universe after its name, Marvel is notorious for nerfing several characters. From Hulk to Vision, several fans have speculated and pointed out the underplaying of these characters. While it comes as no surprise, the Thunder God isn’t exempt from this either. Moreover, the character fails to live up to its barbaric nature.

From his lack of intelligence to his lovesickness, the Thunder God is reduced to a lovesick fool. While the character receives a major power-up in the books, his adaptation isn’t well-received by most fans. His strength and overarching presence in the series is reduced to a mere joke. This holds especially true with the character’s role in the Avengers series which is more than disappointing.

While Zack Snyder is often criticized for his bad writing, the animated series offers a refreshing take through its retelling of Norse mythology. Its deconstruction of the villain archetype is an innovative perspective on the binary of good vs evil. All in all, it is a must-watch for fans who are on the lookout for fresh stories and adaptations.

Twilight of the Gods is available for streaming on Netflix.
