Blackbeard is one of the greatest mysteries in One Piece. While everyone else in the series is only able to have one Devil Fruit, somehow Blackbeard has managed to possess two while staying alive. After so many years, author Eiichiro Oda has yet to explain how he has managed to achieve something impossible.
Now, a recent fan theory explains this mystery with a whole new answer. Based on what has been revealed in the story so far, in this particular theory, Blackbeard is not said to have several souls, but rather three bodies united into one. The best part is that the theory is based on canon events from the Punk Hazard Arc and several clues Eiichiro Oda has left behind throughout the story.
Punk Hazard May Have Solved Blackbeard’s Two Devil Fruits Mystery
For years, many fans have believed that Blackbeard has three souls. The theory is mostly based on the fact that his Jolly Roger shows three skulls and also his odd behaviors throughout the series. However, this new theory provides a new perspective about the mystery. It says the real secret is not his soul – it’s his body.
The biggest clue comes from the Punk Hazard Arc, where Trafalgar Law used the powers of the Ope Ope no Mi to swap everyone’s bodies. Those chapters quietly introduced an important rule in One Piece. They showed that a person’s body and soul are not always the same thing.
For example, Sanji was inside Nami’s body, but he could still use Haki because Haki belongs to the person, not the body they are in. On the other hand, Franky ended up inside Chopper’s body and could use Chopper’s Devil Fruit transformations because those powers stayed connected to Chopper’s physical body. These moments showed that Oda might have already separated the ideas of body and soul in the world of One Piece – Haki belongs to the soul, Devil Fruit powers belong to the physical body.
That is exactly where this Blackbeard theory begins. According to the theory, Blackbeard does not have three souls. Instead, he has three different physical bodies that exist as one person. If each of those bodies can hold its own Devil Fruit, then it never actually broke Blackbeard’s Devil Fruit limits. His Dark-Dark Fruit and Tremor-Tremor Fruit would simply belong to two different bodies within him.
Another reason fans like this theory is because it matches something Marco said during the Marineford War. After Blackbeard stole Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit, Marco explained that Teach has an “atypical” body. He never said anything about multiple souls. Instead, he pointed to Blackbeard’s unusual body as the reason he could do something no one else could.
The theory also gives possible answers to some of Blackbeard’s strangest traits. Early in the series, Buggy said Teach has never slept, and Shanks confirmed hearing the same thing. If Blackbeard really has three fused bodies, some fans believe one body could rest while another stays awake. That would make it look like he never sleeps at all.
His strange durability also fits this idea. During his fight with Ace, Blackbeard admitted that the Dark-Dark Fruit makes him feel more pain than normal. Even so, he keeps getting back up after taking attacks that would defeat most pirates. His unusual body could explain why he takes extra damage but is still able to survive it.
Of course, this is still only a fan theory. Many readers still believe the answer is multiple souls. Others think Blackbeard may have absorbed a conjoined twin before birth, giving him a chimera-like body. There is also another popular theory that an unrevealed Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit is the real reason behind his unique condition. Right now, Oda has not confirmed any of these ideas.
One Piece Final Saga Could Finally Reveal Blackbeard’s Secrets
As the Final Saga moves forward, Blackbeard is becoming more important than ever. He is searching for the One Piece, collecting powerful Devil Fruits, and making his move against the world’s strongest people. As one of Luffy’s biggest rivals, Teach’s true nature cannot stay a mystery forever.

Whether the answer is three physical bodies, multiple souls, a hidden Devil Fruit, or something fans have never imagined, the truth is likely waiting in the Final Saga.
Until then, the “three bodies, not three souls” theory remains one of the most convincing ideas because it builds on rules that already exist in the manga instead of creating completely new ones. If Oda really planted the answer during the Punk Hazard Arc, it would be another example of the long-term storytelling that has made One Piece famous for years.
