A B.C. Mountie is in serious condition in hospital after a crash with a pickup truck while riding his motorcycle near Cranbrook.

The B.C. RCMP highway patrol was called to the collision between a grey Chevrolet Silverado and a black Harley-Davidson on Highway 95A at Mission Wycliffe Road just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old woman at the wheel of the pickup was unhurt, but the 39-year-old motorcyclist, an RCMP officer at a nearby detachment, was seriously injured.

The highway patrol was called in to take over the investigation to ensure its independence, said Sgt. Michael McLaughlin in a statement on Thursday.

“We need as many independent witnesses as possible, along with any dash camera video that shows the events leading up to the collision,” said McLaughlin. “We have already spoken to independent witnesses who stopped to help, but we need to be complete and thorough.”

There are no early indications so far that either impairment or speed were factors, he said. The officer was off-duty and riding his own motorbike at the time.

Charges laid in fatal 2025 truck crash

McLaughlin also reported Thursday that charges have been laid against a tractor-trailer driver in relation to a fatal crash last summer north of Quesnel.

On July 24, 2025, the rider of a Harley-Davidson collided with a Kenworth truck on Highway 97 near Naver Creek Road. The 42-year-old biker, from Chemainus, was killed.

Investigators from the B.C. RCMP highway patrol forwarded results of their investigation to the B.C. Prosecution service, which laid three charges last month against Amninder Singh Sran:

• Operation of a vehicle with a blood-alcohol content over the legal limit causing death

Sran has been ordered to appear in provincial court in Quesnel on Aug. 18.
