Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie releases on Blu-ray on May 26, 2026.
Nirvanna the Band the Show is a Canadian mockumentary series that aired for two seasons in 2017. It began as a web series before making the leap to television, where it garnered a cult following in Canada, but flew mostly under the radar elsewhere. With its feature release, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie brings the baumbastic and unpredictable humor of Matt Johson and Jay McCarrol to a wider audience. It’s a niche style of humor that won’t land for everybody, but is certain to hit hard with its intended audience.
Why Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie matters
Matt Johnson (left) and Jay McCarrol (right)Johnson and McCarrol’s creativity and willingness to push boundaries make Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie a comedy unlike any other audiences have experienced. Similar to movies like Borat and Jackass, the real-world interactions add a unique level of depth to the narrative. The offbeat humor and boundary-pushing punchlines serve as a reminder that independent comedy can often go places traditional studio comedies can’t.
Video quality
The Blu-ray presentation embraces the intentionally rough, unpolished aesthetic of Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. Shot primarily in a mockumentary, handheld style, the film is designed to look imperfect, and that carries through fully in this transfer. Much of the image leans into a grainy, almost DIY look, with fluctuating clarity and texture that reflect the chaotic nature of the production itself.
This is not a film that’s trying to look clean or pristine, and the Blu-ray wisely doesn’t attempt to “fix” that. Instead, it preserves the raw visual style, allowing the shifts in camera quality to feel authentic. That’s especially noticeable during the sequences set in 2008, where the in-world crew swaps to older cameras, resulting in an even more degraded, lower-resolution look that perfectly matches the time period. It’s a stylistic choice that could easily feel distracting, but here it’s part of the film’s identity.
Audio quality
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track complements the mockumentary format well, leaning into a naturalistic and often intentionally uneven sound design. Dialogue remains clear for the most part, but there are frequent shifts in volume and clarity as characters move in and out of range of the camera’s microphones.
That inconsistency is by design, and it adds to the realism of the experience rather than detracting from it. Conversations can feel messy, overlapping, or slightly distant, mirroring the unpredictable nature of the film’s production style.
Packaging and presentation
The release is packaged in a standard Blu-ray keep case. The cover art is the film’s poster. A very simple design of black lettering on a white backdrop that contrasts with the movie’s chaotic plot. It’s simple and serves as a throwback to the series that started the movie.
