Directive 8020 Brings Sci-Fi Horror to the Series
The real horror? Trusting anyone on this ship. | Credits: Supermassive GamesTo give more context about the game, Directive 8020 serves as the fifth main entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology. But this time, the franchise moves deeper into sci-fi survival horror. Set on a spaceship on a perilous mission, the story follows a crew struggling to survive against a shape-shifting alien threat that can imitate humans and turn their own paranoia against them.
The game also leans towards a more stealth-focused gameplay if we compare it to earlier entries in the series. Players will be spending more time hiding, sneaking through corridors, and avoiding enemies while making the tough decisions the anthology is known for.
While some players may feel the gameplay could have pushed the horror elements even further (especially given the series’ history) during exploration and stealth sections, the cast does an impressive job carrying the tension throughout the experience.
The performances help sell both the emotional moments and the fear inside the confined space setting, making the crew and their struggles feel believable from start to finish. Overall, Directive 8020 continues the cinematic storytelling style the series is known for while introducing a fresh sci-fi horror setting.
