Doppelgänger: Everything We Know About Tom Cruise’s Rumored Spy Movie

Tom Cruise has seemingly been tapped for a new spy thriller titled Doppelgänger. No stranger to the realm of spy thrillers, especially given that his celebrated Mission: Impossible franchise began as a grounded spy thriller under Brian De Palma, the movie could mark a return to his roots.

With Paramount Pictures handling production on the movie, which appears to have serious franchise potential, it’ll be interesting to see if this can shape up to become another major IP under Cruise’s belt. For now, here’s everything to know about the movie and Cruise’s rumored role in it.

The movie still appears to be in the very early stages of pre-production, especially since little is known beyond Cruise’s rumored loose attachment to the project. Therefore, there’s no exact information available about the film’s release date as of May 13, 2026. Moreover, with the Mission: Impossible star also set to return for the next installment in the Top Gun franchise, it’ll be interesting to see when the spy thriller gains momentum, if Cruise does indeed end up leading the charge.

The movie has been described as an original spy thriller that will delve into themes of paranoia and espionage. As for the story, it reportedly revolves around a CIA agent who discovers that the Russians have hired an exact body double of him from Brazil and plan to use him as a mole inside the CIA to replace him.

Who Is Involved in Doppelgänger?

The script for the movie, which Skydance Media picked up in mid-2025, comes from writer-director Aneesh Chaganty and his co-writer Dan Frey.

In addition to them, who are currently rewriting the script, Ryan Coogler and Zinzi Coogler will be producing the movie through Proximity Media, alongside Chaganty and Natalie Qasabian via Search Party. Skydance, under David Ellison, nabbed the script for a seven-figure deal (via Deadline), and beyond the talks surrounding Cruise’s potential involvement, the casting for other roles is yet to commence.

Tom Cruise’s Rumored Role in Doppelgänger Explained

Cruise, who is no stranger to the genre, is reportedly being eyed to headline the dual roles in the movie, and according to reports, the script is currently being tailored to better match the actor’s liking. Even though he remains loosely attached to the project and has reportedly met with Chaganty on several occasions, his final decision will apparently come down to the final script, according to Jeff Sneider (via TheInSneider).

I’m told that Chaganty has flown to Florida multiple times to meet with Cruise, and he is currently rewriting Doppelgänger to tailor the script to the actor’s specifications. Naturally, Cruise will only decide whether to officially commit once the final script is delivered. But for now, he is considered loosely attached, according to multiple sources

The movie also reportedly features a very meaty role for an actress, and if the deal ultimately moves forward, audiences could be looking at another major Tom Cruise-driven franchise in the making

Is There a Trailer for the Movie Yet?

Considering the movie still remains in the very early stages of pre-production, it’s easy to see why a trailer for the project could still be months, if not years, away, which will come down to whether the movie does end up moving forward with Cruise at the helm.
