NHL and broadcast world mourn sudden death of goaltender‑turned-analyst John Garrett

John Garrett, who made his mark in net for two major leagues and turned his talents to broadcasting, has died suddenly at 74. Sportsnet announced his death Tuesday morning. In semi-retirement, Garrett had been staying this week in Salt Lake City, working first-round games of the Utah-Vegas series. A cause of death wasn’t listed. “Cheech was a legend,” the network said in a release, “a beloved colleague, friend, and one of the most familiar voices in Canadian hockey.”

As the eighth anniversary of Doug Ford being elected premier of Ontario approaches, his party’s poll numbers are falling. The most recent Abacus Data poll puts Ford’s PC Party in a statistical tie with the leaderless Liberals — 37% for the PCs, 36% for the Liberals with the NDP back at 17% and Greens at 5%. The Abacus poll has Ford at 32% among women while the Liberals are at 42% with women.
