My Happy Marriage is a unique romance anime that is very reminiscent of Cinderella but with more emotional growth and family conflict. The protagonist, Miyo Saimori, is an incredibly tragic character at first, facing abuse from her stepmother and half-sister and neglect from her biological father. She is forced to marry Kiyoka Kudo, who is known for being cruel and multiple prospective fiancees have left. However, Miyo soon finds out Kiyoka is nothing like his reputation.
The lead couple of My Happy Marriage learn to grow together and understand each other’s needs. Their emotional growth and eventual love for each other is irreplaceable. The pacing and story of My Happy Marriage are natural and touching. Miyo finally finds a safe space with him and Kiyoka meets someone who didn’t stay with him for the fame and fortune. They are the crux of My Happy Marriage and their romance isn’t materialistic but completely emotional and based on uplifting each other.
Miyo and Kiyoka’s Bond is About Healing and Emotional Growth
My Happy Marriage isn’t a stereotypical romance where the two leads are already perfect for each other and tailor-made by the creators to be together. Miyo and Kiyoka work towards healing and finding true happiness within their relationship. Miyo, who is severely traumatized, doesn’t immediately feel safe with Kiyoka. She has moments where she falters and can’t communicate well with him. However, Kiyoka understands and reassures her, and she, in turn, heals and learns how to express herself better. It’s a slow-burn story that relies on character development.
The director of My Happy Marriage, Takehiro Kubota, emphasizes what their love is truly about. While he respects that the original story is fully the author’s work, he adds his own thoughts eloquently about their relationship. He says in an interview with Anime News Network:
The whole reason why Kiyoka falls in love with Miyo is because she values something other than his status. She enjoyed the simple living he embraced, unlike his other prospective brides, and in return, he helped her regain her strength after years of facing abuse. Kubota recognizes the foundation of their love is much stronger than any money could ever buy.
My Happy Marriage Portrays Inner Transformation
With everything Miyo has gone through, it’s only natural she wouldn’t complain about his estate being smaller than the main estate of the Kudos. While she definitely had a hint of fear against Kiyoka, she was also grateful to be away from her family. Kiyoka, on the other hand, finds someone who will agree with his lifestyle and not care about his status.
Together, they show the true reason why love will grow and stay strong. My Happy Marriage portrays how inner transformation is essential and the love between Miyo and Kiyoka isn’t based on superficial reasons but for something much more irreplaceable: emotional growth.
My Happy Marriage is now available on Netflix.
