Morgan Wallen had a brief onstage meltdown during a concert in Denver last week when a technical problem left him unable to hear his piano.

The 33-year-old country star was performing at Empower Field at Mile High on Friday as part of his Still the Problem Tour when things went wrong during his 2021 hit Sand in My Boots.

Videos shared on social media show Wallen running into technical difficulties near the end of the song. According to Entertainment Weekly, he told the crowd he would finish the tune a cappella and led thousands of fans in a singalong. But after singing the final note, Wallen suddenly shoved the piano over, appearing to damage the instrument before walking away. Audience members could be heard gasping and cheering as the moment unfolded from multiple angles captured by fans.
According to Rolling Stone, Wallen couldn’t hear the piano during the performance, forcing him to finish the song without accompaniment. Despite the setback, he continued the concert and wrapped up the night with two of his biggest hits, Last Night and Whiskey Glasses.

Taking the incident in stride?
Wallen appeared to laugh off the incident when he returned to the Denver stadium the following night for the second show of the two-night stand. Entertainment Weekly reported that before sitting down to play another ballad, he joked with the audience, saying, “Let’s see if this piano works tonight.”
The Denver dates are part of Wallen’s Still the Problem Tour, which supports his latest album, I’m the Problem. The tour extends his hugely successful 2025 stadium run and is scheduled to wrap up Aug. 1 in Philadelphia.
Tour stops
As we previously reported, the 10-city tour includes stops in Minneapolis, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Gainesville, Denver, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Baltimore, Ann Arbor and Philadelphia. Tuscaloosa, Ala., is the only city receiving a single-night performance.
Wallen is touring with a rotating cast of opening acts. Main support duties are shared by Thomas Rhett, Hardy, Ella Langley and Brooks & Dunn, while other performers on select dates include Gavin Adcock, Flatland Cavalry, Hudson Westbrook, Jason Scott & the High Heat, Zach John King, Vincent Mason and Blake Whiten.

Other headline-making outbursts
The piano-tipping moment also drew attention because it comes about two years after another headline-making outburst. As previously noted, Wallen was arrested in Nashville in April 2024 after throwing a chair from the roof of a downtown bar. The incident was reportedly linked to news that his former girlfriend, KT Smith, had eloped with another man. He later pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and was sentenced to two years’ probation and a week at a DUI education centre, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Wallen also faced public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges in 2020 after being removed from Kid Rock’s Nashville bar. He later said he and his friends had simply been “horse-playing” after a night out.
The following year, he was caught on a neighbour’s doorbell camera using the N-word while referring to a drunk friend. The controversy led to a suspension from his record label and saw radio stations pull his music from their playlists.
