Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair Review: Muniz, Cranston, and Kaczmarek Return in an Anarchic, Wildly Funny Revival

Life's Still Unfair, streaming on Hulu April 10th!

I’ll tell you, rarely does a sitcom surprise me, but the pilot of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair had me howling by the end, landing a perfect joke. The streaming revival miniseries captures the original’s groundbreaking family-comedy style, which is razor-sharp and visually energetic, turning domestic dysfunction, even the positive kind, into something anarchic and wildly funny.

In other words, even though life is still dealing Malcolm a few punches, Hulu’s Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair laughs hit harder.

Frankie Muniz returns as the titular character, Malcolm, now an adult running a charity addressing water insecurity. He is doing well after growing up frazled, anxious, and paranoid. It’s a miracle he has not developed questionable coping habits along the way. A single father, whose wife left them years ago, is raising his teenage daughter (Keeley Karsten of The Fabelmans).

The problem is that Leah is experiencing the same inherited neurotic, hyper-aware tendencies that her father displayed two decades ago. Frankly, Leah needs her extended family, but Malcolm is so busy he barely has time to visit his parents, even for their grand anniversary celebration, where his overbearing mother, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), and well-meaning father, Hal (Bryan Cranston), expect him to attend.

To be fair, his family hasn’t changed. In a hilarious scene, Bryan Cranston’s Hal performs the Bruno Mars single “Locked Out of Heaven” with a group of friends in a big-box store, professing his love for Lois. However, while both are well-intentioned, they remain overbearing in their own ways, something Malcolm is still unequipped to handle.

The majority of the core cast returns, except for Dewey, with Caleb Ellsworth Clark, when Erik Per Sullivan decided not to return for the revival. Dewey appears mostly on video calls on the family computer, making me wonder if they missed an opportunity to have Aaron Paul take over the role with a well-placed “Yeah, Bitch” at the end of every phone call.

Their eldest child, Francis (Christopher Masterson), and his wife, Piama (Emy Coligado), are trying to have a baby while thriving at a tech company. Reese now has a rock-solid relationship with Hal, who fills the void in his personal life with odd home-repair projects. Even their youngest, Jamie (Anthony Timpano), makes the trek home.

And don’t forget Kelly (Vaughan Murrae), who was teased in the original series finale, an activist-minded teen who confuses her poor parents by throwing a half-dozen pronouns at them at a time. This is where the comedy begins to shine, filtering the show’s distinct brand of humor through a generational lens, where the younger crowd is socially conscious and the older more conservative, and shaping the characters from that tension.

Yet this version of Malcolm feels like the same old show, anchored by three terrific comedic turns from Cranston, Muniz, and Kaczmarek. While Cranston will draw the spotlight (who was unfairly never given an Emmy for the role of Hal, which should have happened for the roller-skating routine alone), it’s Kaczmarek who received seven Emmy nominations as Lois.

Is Hulu’s Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair Worth Watching?

She crafts a character who is terrifying, hilarious, and deeply flawed, which is far removed from the typical sitcom housewife. I will say Cranston still shines as the lovable, perhaps even with the toxic positivity coming out of his pores. He displays classic comedic physicality, warm sincerity, and the nearly perfect contrast to Kaczmarek.

Yet, Hulu’s Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is well worth your time because Frankie Muniz has grown into a strong adult actor, not something most child stars can claim (and even some in this revival). Muniz still plays Malcolm as he did years ago, against type, irritated, overwhelmed, and miserable, but now with a bigger heart, driven by his love for his daughter.

Muniz’s mature performance, while still providing plenty of frenetic laughs, gives Malcolm the adult depth, elevating the revival from nostalgia to something genuinely meaningful and not just funny, but earned.

You can stream the entire season of Malcom in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair on April 10th. All four episodes were screened for this review.
