LEAFS LIGHT
Steve Simmons is right about MSLE management mainly acquiring overpaid older players of limited ability (“Worth the risk,” July 2). Jack Roslovic should be a good addition, but the rest will not suffice to meet the Maple Leafs’ depth requirements and John Chayka’s great goalie gamble is probably not a good bet. Through bad trades and a shortage of cap space (due to overpayment of the “core four”), Toronto has lost several good players of grit and talent, including Nazem Kadri, Zach Hyman, Michael Bunting and, recently, Fraser Minten and Bobby McMann. Every new Leaf management in the last 20 years has had to fill in the roster holes left by the previous administration. It is worthwhile remembering that the 1960s Leaf teams did not have any superstars (although Frank Mahovlich sometimes approached that level). What they did have was depth at all positions, three good lines, a serious mental toughness, and a strong team culture — and they actually won the big prize! Sort of like the 2025-26 Marlies.

(Those costly, no-move contracts have been an albatross for the Leafs)

DEVELOPING NEWS
Re “Taxpayers on the hook” (Ling Hui, June 29): Prime Minister Mark Carney admits that “no developer asked for this from me directly” and that his “new” government had done a “poor job” of explaining his latest example of corporate welfare. So, this is simply a public relations problem? That’s the real issue here?
