Jujutsu Kaisen Officially Reveals New Combat Sorcerer With Steam-Powered Cursed Technique

For years, Yu Haibara existed in Jujutsu Kaisen as one of its biggest “what ifs.” He was cheerful, kind, hopelessly optimistic, and gone almost as soon as fans got to know him. Now, the young sorcerer is finally getting a little more time in the spotlight – stepping up for the first time as a brand-new combat sorcerer on the battlefield. Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade introduced Haibara as a playable character on August 31, 2026, and, with him, revealed the Cursed Technique fans never got to see in the original story: Steam Sorcery, or “Steam Technique” (Jōki Juhō).

Manga creator Gege Akutami even drew an all-new illustration of Haibara to commemorate his new journey. The reveal was made under Akutami’s supervision, giving fans their first official look at how Haibara actually fought and effectively debuting him as an active fighter in the franchise’s roster.

Yu Haibara’s Tragic Story Made His Jujutsu Kaisen Return Even Bigger

Haibara was a first-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High alongside Kento Nanami during the events of the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death storyline. While Nanami was serious, skeptical, and perpetually unimpressed with the world around him, Haibara was almost aggressively sunny. The official anime character profile describes him as straightforward, bright, and inclined to see the good in everyone. It also notes his love of people and rice.

Haibara and Nanami were sent on what was believed to be a relatively manageable mission against a Grade 2 Cursed Spirit. The assessment was wrong. The curse was actually stronger, having been empowered by its status as a guardian deity in the local area, and Haibara was killed during the mission.

His death became one of the defining tragedies in Nanami’s life. Years later, Haibara’s memory resurfaced during the Shibuya Incident, including at the moment Nanami was nearing his own death. The emotional callback underscored just how deeply Nanami had carried his friend’s memory.

That makes Phantom Parade’s Haibara reveal unusually poignant. The original manga and anime never showed his Cursed Technique. Now, years after fans first met him, the game has filled in one of the character’s biggest unanswered questions—without changing the tragedy that originally defined him.

Haibara’s Steam Sorcery Turns Cursed Energy Into Explosive Strength

As a newly playable combat sorcerer, Haibara’s newly revealed technique is wonderfully straightforward and somehow extremely Haibara. According to the official announcement, Steam Sorcery constructs a steam-engine-like mechanism inside his body. His Cursed Energy functions as the water, while the technique itself provides the fire or boiler needed to produce steam. That steam then dramatically boosts his physical abilities.

In other words, Haibara isn’t suddenly revealed to be a long-range curse-slinging mastermind. His technique turns his own body into a Cursed-Energy-powered engine. That makes perfect sense for a character whose combat potential was never properly explored in the manga. Steam Sorcery is built around physical enhancement, meaning Haibara can close the distance and throw himself into combat rather than relying on elaborate ranged attacks.

And, because this is Jujutsu Kaisen, there is a catch. The technique is notoriously inefficient, causing Haibara to burn through his resources quickly and, hilariously enough, get hungry easily. It is a tiny detail, but a very fitting one for the character officially described as someone who loves rice.

Importantly, the reveal does not establish new manga feats or suddenly place Haibara above established sorcerers. It simply gives fans the fighting ability he never had the opportunity to demonstrate in the original story.

What Is Jujutsu Kaisen Phantom Parade Game?

Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade is the official RPG based on the anime, developed by Sumzap and published by Bilibili. The game originally launched in Japan in November 2023 and recreates the TV anime’s story with newly recorded full voice acting, while also offering original game stories and character-focused material (via the official website).

That distinction is particularly important with Haibara. His Steam Sorcery was not revealed in a new manga chapter. It was introduced through Phantom Parade, where Haibara became the new playable SSR character “Burning Feelings” Yu Haibara on August 31, 2026. The game also launched a Haibara-focused story event, “Steam-Hot Sorcerer,” running from August 31 through September 29.

The technique itself was presented as material supervised by Gege Akutami, making it an especially notable addition for longtime fans while still belonging to the game’s expanded material rather than a newly published manga event. Haibara’s original story remains tragic and unchanged. His death still shaped Nanami. But Phantom Parade has finally given fans something the manga never could: a glimpse of the young sorcerer fighting with the strange, wonderfully literal technique that was always hiding beneath that cheerful smile.
