Invincible: How Oliver Dies in the Comics & Who Kills Him

Invincible has a lot of characters that fans have grown to love, chief among them Oliver Grayson. While the character does not win many fights, he does end up winning hearts with the show’s fans. However, Oliver is one of the few characters who permanently kicks it in the comics, and his death is bound to leave the show-only audience with mixed feelings.

Oliver Grayson is murdered by Thragg while trying to defend his niece. However, the events that preceded his death might give audiences mixed feelings about the character’s death. Further, it is most likely going to be the case that Robert Kirkman is going to change the character’s funeral. There are some developments that happened in the comics that might not sit well with audiences if adapted into the show.

Oliver Grayson Was A Double Agent For Thragg

Oliver is tasked by Allen to look into Thragg’s movements. However, it is also revealed during this time that Oliver has been working for Thragg as well, feeding him information that would aid his cause. By this time, the Viltrumite Empire had deserted Thragg, coming under the leadership of Nolan after he was revealed to be the true heir of Argall.

However, at this point in the story, Mark had told Allen, who was leading the Coalition at this point in the story, that he would not be involved in the fight with Thragg and his Viltrumite-Thraxan hybrids. However, Allen and Oliver led Thragg to Mark, Eve, and Terra, in the hopes that Mark would join the fight. However, when it seemed that Eve and Mark were both killed, Oliver stepped in to save his niece. Thragg killed him before Eve’s powers resurrected her and Mark. Thragg drove his hand through Oliver’s chest, eviscerating his torso.

Invincible Is Likely Going To Change Some Things About Oliver’s Funeral

In the comics, Oliver’s death is the consequence of actions taken by Allen to secure Mark and Nolan’s help against Thragg. Right after Oliver’s funeral takes place, Mark and Eve get married. It would have made sense if the entire affair had been on the down low, but it was a lavish party that had most of the people who attended Oliver’s funeral in attendance.

Given how much more emotionally complex the characters have been in the show, it is likely that the marriage is going to happen later, or before Oliver dies altogether. Haluma, the mother of Oliver’s children, is actually happy about the entire arrangement, saying it is exactly what people need to restore hope in the world. However, given how the show has been treating emotional moments that were throwaways in the book, either Haluma is going to be very angry at the wedding, or the wedding is going to be shifted altogether.

Robert Kirkman has been using the show as an opportunity to tighten the story that he wrote, and this might be one of the moments that he decides to rework for the general audience. What do you think? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!
