Season 4 of Invincible has come to a close with its final episode, which marks the physical reunion between Debbie Grayson and Omni-Man, with the former confronting Nolan for betraying her in Season 1. Although Nolan asks for forgiveness and a second chance, Debbie remains firm in her decision to keep her distance.
Despite her anger, she eventually chooses to travel to Talescria with Nolan to see her son, who is still recovering from the injuries he sustained during the Viltrumite War. While the show leans toward ambiguity about whether they will reconcile, it still leaves the door open, and, going by the comics, it’s fair to assume they will eventually reconcile.
Does Nolan and Debbie’s Romance Rekindle in the Comics?
Debbie Grayson and Nolan’s relationship rekindles in the Invincible, and it unfolds much more swiftly in the comics. But it’s important to note that the adaptation’s Debbie is quite different from her comic counterpart, who, despite initially rejecting Nolan’s apology, eventually entertains the prospect of getting back together.
More notably, the two even hook up on their way to Talescria, which isn’t out of character for Debbie in the comics, where she is depicted as far more loyal to Nolan, and at one point, she even blames her son for driving Nolan away.
The show, however, takes a more slow-burning approach to their relationship, as Debbie is given far more agency, and it fits well with this version of the character, who is still grappling with the psychological trauma Nolan caused.
How Invincible Season 4 Changes Nolan and Debbie’s Reunion
A still from Invincible Season 4 | Credit: Prime VideoAs discussed before, there’s no swift resolution to Nolan and Debbie’s relationship, as not only does she refuse to accept his apology, but she also tells him he cannot sleep at her house.
Even during their journey to Talescria, while Nolan considers reaching out to her in order to comfort Debbie, he eventually stops because he has yet to earn her trust back. Robert Kirkman himself acknowledged these changes regarding Debbie’s character, who doesn’t have a robust role in the comics (via The Wrap).
That character does not have as robust a role in the comic book series. It’s just something that we didn’t really do. It was a blind spot for us when we were doing that book. So in deepening that character and getting to know her perspective more and seeing everything that Simon and the writers were able to add to her character and that story, that all shifts where you see that character going and what you think that she’s capable of and willing to accept.
Although it’s safe to say we’ll eventually see them warm up to each other again, the road to atonement will be a long one for Nolan in the show as compared to the comics.
