Daisy Ridley‘s critically acclaimed zombie thriller is all set to make its streaming debut next month. We Bury the Dead was released in U.S. theaters on January 2, 2026. A month later, it was made available on digital platforms to buy or rent. The movie is finally coming to Hulu on May 8, 2026.
Ridley played the role of Ava in the Zak Hilditch-directed movie, a woman who volunteers to join the military rescue effort in Tasmania after a military disaster in order to search for her missing husband. The disaster leaves many living victims brain-dead, but many of them start to regain motor function and become undead, making Ava’s journey more challenging.
The streaming release comes four months after its theatrical release and nearly a year and a half since it had its world premiere at the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival. It also premiered at the SXSW Festival in March 2025. It is also expected to be released on 4K UHD and Blu-Ray on July 8.

Daisy Ridley’s We Bury the Dead Received Critical Acclaim
Daisy Ridley’s new movie received a positive critical reception upon its release. From 115 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie earned an 88% Tomatometer score. The movie subverted the usual zombie movie tropes, giving us a different version of the undead.
Moreover, Zak Hilditch didn’t anchor his movie just on the horror elements of the undead. The movie’s emotional side was equally impactful, with Ridley delivering a strong performance in the lead role. We are taken through her loss and grief as she searches for her husband and learns about the fate of the characters she comes across in her journey.
But the general audience didn’t give it a favorable reception, with the popcornmeter score on the website as low as 46%. Many of these fans felt cheated when the movie failed to deliver an actual zombie movie. They felt that the pacing made it too boring, and there weren’t many big moments in the movie.
Now, Ridley’s reputation with a section of the audience could have also contributed to the poor audience ratings. The movie made nearly $4 million during its run. Out of this collection, the movie made $3 million in its opening weekend, marking Vertical Entertainment’s highest box office opening.
We Bury the Dead Could Be Zombie Genre’s Fresh Revival
Daisy Ridley in We Bury the Dead | Credits: Vertical EntertainmentThe zombie genre has been running on fumes for years now. After The Walking Dead dominated pop culture for years, a flood of imitators oversaturated the genre. They all came with the same survival-group dynamics, predictable jump scares, and familiar wasteland setting.
Many franchise attempts like Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead have largely recycled these tired tropes, leaving audiences numb to the genre. There have been the occasional good ones, but most of them came from outside Hollywood, like Train to Busan and All of Us Are Dead.
While We Bury the Dead doesn’t fall in the same league as Train to Busan, it doesn’t neglect the human stories and go all in on the dread. The Daisy Ridley movie places the undead into an emotional story that deals with grief, loss, and the lengths we go to for closure.
The actors, especially Ridley, gave measured performances that are in sync with the story’s quieter tone. Zak Hilditch preferred practical effects over CGI, lending the visuals an authentic, unsettling quality. The movie suggests that the genre has a lot more to offer than just formulaic films.
