Through all the seasons of FRIENDS, fans have seen all kinds of storylines make their way into the fabric of the series. From weird love interests to feuds among the protagonists, and even deep-rooted issues, there are several plots that fans love and some that they hate with a passion. Recently, fans started a conversation about a storyline that is widely disliked among the community.
However, looking at it from a new perspective, fans began to realize that it was one of the funniest moments for one character, and the person who can be credited for this is none other than David Schwimmer.
FRIENDS’ Worst Storyline
Although Ross goes through several important storylines throughout FRIENDS, there is one running joke that never gets old. Considering how the series starts with his first divorce, it is not surprising that even by the end, the character and the audience cannot get enough of him being the butt of all marriage jokes.
After several failed relationships and three divorces, Ross’ luck with love only gets better by the end of the series when he gets together with Rachel. However, there is one point throughout the series that fans collectively hate; thinking it to be the lowest point in the long love story of Ross and Rachel.
The point where Rachel and Joey get together is heavenly criticized by fans, not only because it was bound to end, but also because of how long it lasted. There is one particular point in their relationship that fans hate with intent; when Joey accidentally proposes to Rachel.
In the first episode of season 9, fans are introduced to a new nuisance as Joey accidentally proposes to Rachel with Ross’ family ring, and Jennifer Aniston’s character says yes. The episode has been ripped apart by fans for years, and many end up skipping it every time they rewatch the series.
It is because of this sentiment that it is quite surprising to see that they are having a change of heart when a fan posted a clip of the scene on Reddit.
David Schwimmer’s Humor Is Legendary
Although Ross is one of the lesser-liked protagonists from FRIENDS, there is no denying that David Schwimmer was behind some of the most hilarious scenes from the series. From moving the couch to teaching Rachel and Phoebe self-defense, and even his reaction to Monica and Chandler being together. It is safe to say that he was one of the most hilarious actors on the show, second only to Matthew Perry.
With this in mind, it is not surprising that he was able to save the series from one of its worst arcs, according to fans. At one point in the episode, Phoebe finds out that Rachel is engaged and naturally assumes that it is with Ross, considering that she just delivered their baby. When she goes to Schwimmer’s character to congratulate him, he is very confused.
With just how many times he has been engaged and married, he was very confused about if he had accidentally proposed to Rachel again. Joking that he was not in his right senses, he mentioned that proposing to someone does sound like something he frequently does.
I didn’t propose! (Pause) Unless uh… (Pause) Did I? I haven’t slept in 40 hours &…it does sound like something I would do.
In the Reddit thread, fans began to discuss that even though they hated the episode and did not like the Rachel and Joey storyline, they could not help but love Ross’ joke. Despite the episode being one of the most disliked among the community, fans collectively agree that the jokes were one of the best ones made by Schwimmer’s character throughout the series.
